It really depends on what you need. I did the axle on my tandem a couple of months ago which needed the caliper pistons and shoes replaced. It is best to purchase the entire plate that has the backing plate, calipers, pads and pistons all together. You just detach the existing brakeline, unbolt the plate, reinstall and bleed the system. Pretty easy. You will want to check, clean and repack the wheel bearings while you have them off. If the master cylinder needs to be replaced it will require more work. The plates where about $50.00 each and a couple of hours of my time.

Champion trailers has a nice disk brake kit that has everything you need for a one axel complete replacement of the brakes. About $400 and its a simple install.

And just to prevent confusion if you start calling around for prices on parts:

The major parts of drum brakes are wheel cylinders, backing plates, and shoes. The drums are part of the hub so you need to pull the bearings to take a look at what's going on inside the drum.

The major parts of disk brakes are calipers, disks, and pads. You can check the condition of all of the parts without pulling anything apart.

Hope that helps.
