The NWL and INT are active. I've been active with wakesurfing. My crew has been running comps in Columbus, not sure we can repeat next year. Chris Walker runs NWL comp in Dayton.

There are a bunch of man made lakes and some good rivers. Most of the lakes are too crowded on weekends.

Are you headed this way, what part of the state?

Lake Milton is home to a nice little wakeboard shop, right before the bridge called "Water's Edge". On an average nice summer day, you will see an average of 4-6 wakeboats out at any given time of the day. I've seen it get fairly busy.
Every year "Wake Milton" is held, which is an Am. competition sponsored by Water's Edge, LF, Hyperlite and various others just to name a few.
Gerry Nunn usually holds a clinic every once and awhile, Keith Lyman has been out along with several other pros.

we might, possibly, maybe moving there, not sure where next year. I used to live in columbus, whithall, and dayton when I was a kid, for a few years so I remember the hot summers but how long are the season for riding?

We start in April. I winterize in October. Last year I rode April through December.

We ride mostly on the Ohio and the Licking. From time to time we hit some lakes in KY (Williamstown, Cumberland). We are about the same in terms of season length (April - Oct usually).

I hear that the scene up toward Dayton/Columbus is pretty good but I don't know any riders up that way. However there is a decent amount of activity in the Cincinnati / NKY area.

No Wake Marine and Cincinnati MasterCraft (who's getting up and running) have done some good events in the past.

We rode yesterday out at Caesars Creek (Dayton area) in a drysuit. Winterized the boat last night.

ok, so area would be the best to stay away from ie travel time to the water etc. north , south east west part of the state...
Old     (joeshmoe)      Join Date: Jan 2003       11-01-2008, 11:15 AM Reply
kenny, stay away from south, southeast, and west. There are spots that are flat all the time, milton is one. The best place to live is northern ohio, but there is no wake scene.
Old     (ghostrider_2)      Join Date: Aug 2004       11-01-2008, 11:21 AM Reply
spots that are flat?
doesn't have to be a huge scene, just good water for the fam and me. I always recruit new people to the sport so I can create a new crew to ride with if nec.

why stay away from those area's?
Old     (alteczen)      Join Date: Aug 2003       11-01-2008, 4:24 PM Reply
I'd disagree... but then again I live near Cincy.

I'm guessing he's saying stay away because the lakes near Cincinnati get pretty busy (East Fork, Brookville, Ceasars Creek). However if you know where to look there are some good spots that you can hit. Plus you are a 2-3 hr drive from Cumberland and maybe 4 from Norris.
Old     (bigshow)      Join Date: Feb 2005       11-01-2008, 4:42 PM Reply
Also disagree. Lake Erie is awful. The Ohio River and Muskingum River are both very good. Lots of lakes relatively close to Dayton, Columbus, and Cincy.

The Maumee River near Toledo is good. Better up stream of Mary Jane Thurston.

cable park in cincy. Do you need another reason?
Old     (joeshmoe)      Join Date: Jan 2003       11-01-2008, 11:13 PM Reply
yes Altec, ceasars creek is packed, so is salt fork, there can be no wind and you still have a 2 or 3 ft.chop.
Cedar point in sandusky has the best beach in ohio, besides the best rollercoasters, we don't wakeboard on lake erie, but its the best in ohio for kiteboarding, kalahari is the best water park in ohio, we wakeboard in sandusky bay or one of the rivers, also, there is put n bay and kelleys island which make northern ohio quite unique.

It doesn't matter where you live in Ohio. You have a boat that is reasonably easy to trailer,so any where you end up in Ohio you will have someplace close enough to ride.
Old     (romes)      Join Date: Sep 2006       11-02-2008, 8:53 AM Reply
the best place to ride in OH, KY, IN is the licking river.

the only problem with living up north is it gets friggin COLD.

yes and no on picking any city.

I am up for orders next month (Navy) and I/We want to go back on recruiting duty. I've already completed a tour of recuiting back home in Sacramento,Ca. This time I would like somewhere different if possible. So if I know in advance where I would like to go or stay away from it makes the negotations easier. If they want to sent me somewhere that is not a good place (whole picture, cost of living, area, wakeboarding) then we will stay west coast.

Cold is only a mindset , I was just out yesterday in only wetsuit. The water temp read 45 degrees.

Jr- I just moved from California to open this up. Hit us up when you come back to the Nati.

Paul- We will have a soft open in April and grand opening in May. Our soft open might creep into March depending on the weather.

Gas is down to $1.84 in some places, and I think the Ohio average is $2.00 or so.

Pete... sorry I caught ya spilling the beans, you gotta let me in on the "soft open" as well!!!!! I'll throw on the dry suit for sure!!

Kenny, the Columbus scene is amazing... I used to ride as much as I could in Cleveland, but there's really nowhere good to ride... once I came to OSU I started riding with so many different people and my riding has gotten so much better... I've never gone wakeboarding in Cincinnati, but i imagine it must have a good wake scene. And if it doesn't already, I'm sure it will real soon!!

Curt - You should hit me up in the Natti next summer. We ride all summer long and are always looking for new people to ride with (and push us). If not - I'm sure we'll cross paths at WN come Spring.

Peter,

Any idea on when obstacles will be in the water? You're going to have major support from our area.

A-dub, we don't have all the obstacles designed but we plan on starting with 4 and coming out with new ones each month.

BTW, you can check out some images of our cable installation at myspace.com/wakenation.

Kenny,

Wright-Patterson AFB is in Dayton. Likely the best spot for medical, dental support, commissary etc.
Cincinnati is about an hour south, Columbus an hour east. Ohioans act like it is across the country.

If you end up in Ohio you can find a place to ride. I would go to Tennessee and mooch off the Army myself, but either way, good luck.

well if your thinking about ohio there is a wake scene in the northern part... its just very small and you have to get out on the weekdays or in the early morning of the weekend to catch us. we ride on pleasent hill lake and there are about two other boats that are regulars out there with us

I think it's an 8 acre lake - and about 8 ft deep. Pete can clarify tho...

It looks plenty big enough for a personal lake for 1 boat.

Hey Kenny,

We are on 20 acres of land with a 8 acre lake. Roughly 8 feet deep. The lake liner went in last week and the building is pretty much framed out. Parking lot will be paved on Tuesday. We will have 7 carriers, so 7 people can go at the same time.

We are still trying to figure out what to do with our island. It's about 3 acres in size and we ran electric out to it when we dug the lake. We can't really shuttle people out to it because we would have to stop the cable. Any ideas?
Thanks, Pete

Kenny - if you make it up to Northeast Ohio, I would recommend driving 2 and a half hours to Chautauqua Lake. I know a bunch of Clevelanders who ride there. I saw someone asking the price of gas earlier on in the post. I just bought gas at $1.62 yesterday. I hope this helps.

peter, put a 2.0 in the middle with a drop/kicker up , box, and a downrail. i think you could have a shuttle going back and forth once every 45 min.s or something and it would work. if you're shuttle was like a pontoon boat, you could just slow the cable down without actually stopping it all the way and go between riders. the riders would know when the cable is about to slow if they saw people loading up on it when they came around.

hard to everything that's in my head here. i think it could work though.

Kenny,

Back to the original topic, I moved to Columbus a bout 2 years ago now and have had a great time with the wake crowd here in town. A lot of good people in this town.

If you decide to land around here look me up, we are out on one of a few different boats at least 3 days a week usually more during the season.
