What differences does propellers make?

I`m willing to buy a new Axis A20 boat sometime soon. I was checking the boat options, and i saw that i could chose between three propellers: the standard (don`t know which one is it), the core propeller (OJ 14.75 X 13 LC XMP CORE 4-blade, which supposedly creates a better low end performance) or the High altitude prop (CNC Nibral 4 blade 14.5 x 14.25 High Altitude Propeller, used by the Vandall). Could someone please tell me which one is better? Do they change the wake format or size?

A change in propeller will change how your hull and engine perform together. In general, a lower pitch propeller will give you better performance at lower speeds or with more weight and a higher pitch will give you more top end speed. There are other variables as well that someone more educated will likely point out.

The bottom line is that the propeller alone will not change the composition or size of your wake much but may allow you to run more weight. More weight will obviously increase your wake although that shouldn't have to be said.

If you are planning to run with stock ballast, at or around sea level, get the standard.

If you plan to run LOTS Of extra ballast, get the Core.

If you plan to run at high altitude all the time (5k ft and higher), get the high altitude.

I say go high altitude, your top speed will only be 39mph but who really cares unless you need to make super long runs to your ski spot. These boats are built for low end torque, the high altitude will give you plenty of pull for full stock ballast and a full load of passengers. Also much better for surfing and holding speed. With the high altitude you can cruise at 30 to 35mph, not the best choice if you slalom ski a lot but great for wakeboarding and surfing.

I think it really depends on the engine option. If you are rocking the very antiquated AR335, then you will likely want a prop upgrade. Rocking the LS3, you would probably be happy with the stock prop. Though if I was laying down money for a brand new boat, I wouldn't consider anything but the LS3...do you really want your brand new boat rocking a motor whose last automobile home was a cargo van in 2003 (and hasn't been updated since 1996), or something currrently in production?
