I ordered two oil filters for my malibu online at a reputable online dealer. I got them today -- they don't look new. The paint is scratched on them, they look just kind of ... well ... used, though they dont have any oil on them. They did not come in boxes. Do most supplier get these in bulk -- like in a big plastic bag or something? I was expecting at least a box around them like in the auto parts store.

Lemme know if I'm off base or if this is totally normal...

I work for a large forklift dealer and our filters do not come individually boxed. If there isn't oil in it then I would say it probably isn't used. I doubt we would ship a scratched one to a customer though...

I would use them but I am concerned with the paint chips that look like they are entering into the filter. Other than that as long as I didnt see oil in them, a little scratched paint isnt going to cause me to not use them.

in a marine environment, you want paint, unless you like to roll the dice

that filter would not last 1 week in the salt

Filters are made entirely with galvanized steel exept maybe the super cheap no name ones. The paint is merely for looks and for them to put their logo and other info on. 90% of the boats on this site dont run in salt so not even an issue for the majority on here. Stop with that nonsense.

a marine environment is not just salt water, salt water just acts as a huge azz battery which will rapidly introduce corrsion

look at galvanized trailers, they rust, LOL

looks like somebody dropped it

If it was dropped wouldnt there be a dent or dents? I see none. Heck I dont even see any scratches from an impact, just some peeling paint like it was rolling around in a box or on the shelf.

i see a dent, 2, unless that is the camera playing tricks

on the seal side

Dent or no dent, as long as there isnt paint chips inside the filter, and the threads and seal are fine with no sign of oil ever being in them, I would use them without giving it a second thought...period.

The seal looks good, and those dents may be factory they don't seem to interfere with the gasket at all. I'd throw it on and be happy to have got a cheap one so long as it works.

For what it's worth I ride in salt and have had rusty fuel filters (same filter style as the photo, just a different thread and size) not a big deal, the inside was fine, the oil filter is usually too high up to get wet, I've not had one rust on me.

so you would put that filter on a car at your shop?

also a fuel filter has less than 3 psi, more like 4'' Hg

an oil filter can have up to 80 or more PSI
