I know just about nothing about props. I have switched to a steel prop as advised in order to get more power. Was I advised well? What are the pros/cons of steel vs. brass? Does steel vibrate more?

Are you talking Stainless Steel? It's my understanding that if you hit something with a Stainless Prop... you're more likely to do damage to the other drive train components, as opposed to a NiBral Prop. The Nibral is I guess a much softer metal, so if you hit something... it takes the hit as opposed to damaging shaft, tranny etc.. At least that's what I've heard. Personally I try very hard not to hit anything, but... Sh*t Happens!

Yeah stainless. My boat stays on 1 lake all year and I know it very well so there really isn't much risk of hitting anything solid with it.

SS props are hand formed. In order to get it accurate, you have it professionally worked (Holland Propeller, Holland, MI for example). The latest CNC props come that way from the factory. There is no performance gain from a CNC to a SS, the opposite is often, but not always, true. Back in the day, SS props increased performance due to the thinner blade. That has been erased by the CNC and new NiBrAl alloys that allow for a much thinner profile. My guess is that a properly matched CNC prop would perform better than a generic SS prop.

problem i see with stainless as opposed to nybrol is they are heavier, and stronger, and when you hit something it transfers alot more of the stress up the driveshaft making u more likely to bend a strut or shaft or worse.

I think id rather replace or repair a nybrol prop then a strut/shaft/tranny.

I don't know much about props either but, i know they use brass for a reason.

I accidentally ran over a log about a month ago which annihilated the prop... luckily that was all the damaged. If the prop was any stronger (i.e. SS) I'm sure the damaged would have been a lot worse.... shaft, tranny.

Even if the SS prop gave you a little more power, you probably wouldn't feel or notice the difference.
