Got BURNED from Mastercraft hull light

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I have never really paid attention to where the lights are on other boats. Also, my crew is almost never out on the water at dark, so we never use the lights.

Well, on Labor Day weekend, as we were pulling up on the trailer, my friend leaned over to help with the boat buddy. Not paying any attention to the light, his chest got a pretty bad burn.

Just kinda sucks for him and now we know for the future to be aware of it. No, I dont need any smart comments that a light will get hot after being on for a while. I know that.

The point was that we have put the boat on the trailer 1000 times and never had to worry about it. Upload

I have laid over my light a few times, although I have never been burned that bad.

i've done the exact same thing on my xstar. leaned over to check that the boat buddy was latched...ssssssssssssssssiiizzzle. hurt like a mofo, but i didn't get a mark like your buddy.

Mine gets real hot, so I know about this. I use my Nav lights often as we tend to board right into dark! But I am going to speculate that not a lot of ppl on WW actually use their boat during the evening hours because you're off the water before dusk as most rules of ramps dicatate. Therefore many are not aware that these lights are incandescent and get super hot.

LED lights would be a better option IMHO.

Wow, and I thought my hideaway light was just for looks! :-)

Are you sure there isn't some kind of short in the light that may make it even hotter than it should be. That's pretty extreme.

My gets hot, and I always tell people to check it first. I would imagine it could burn. I have been thinking of putting led's in it, but I guess I will wait till someone gets burned!

yea, we never thought about it either. but, now that we have thought about it, do other manufacturers have their lights located in better places? from dave's post, i guess malibu does. any others?
maybe mastercraft ought to reconsider if it serves no purpose of being on top like that. seems like any body part is more likely to touch on top of the hull than below.

Get an X-star.... They're on the sides of the boat, totally out of the way.

That sucks, though... I'd make sure the bulb is the right wattage. I don't think they should ever get that hot.

I've never had a light get that hot before. We even had 2 on our table we take to boat shows.
I bet they have gone to a hotter burning bulb in the past few years. Ouch!

all my boats bow lights have gotten that hot if they are on for a period of time... i cant tell you how many times I have forgotten... but after one like that... ouch...burned into my memory for sure!

my bow light gets super hot, so much so that i have to warn passengers if we are out after sunset! My wife found out the hard way on the palm of her hand, but not nearly as bad as your buddy.

I did that on my old '02 X-7, well not quite that bad. I think the new ones use LED's. I know mine are LED's now. Although, like Evan said, they're on the sides. Thanks for offering for us to stay over on Sunday, but Jo was not feeling too hot so we decided to just head home.

The lights are regulated by the federal government. LEDs only recently approved. This is, unfortunately, somewhat common.

It is possible to put a higher wattage bulb in then was originally installed. This would cause the assy to be alot hotter then it should be.

Could have been worse, imagine if he was straddling the bow as the boat nosed into the trailer. Wow, a burn like that on the plums would make your eyes water plenty. The only upside would be your girl rubbing ointment on them.

i have gotten burned by the light on our 06 x-30. it was not near as bad becuase it was only a quick touch of the hand. sorry to hear about your friend.

i will have to ask him to send me a pic to see what it looks like now. in the meantime, i guess i will have to tell him to buy me a new xstar like evan said. that way he wont have anything to worry about when he gets on my boat

I got burned by my 2005 Malibu WS this year. Well, let's just say my cat-like reflexes kept me from having a visual burn mark after my bare chest touched the nav light when I was attaching the boat to the trailer. It felt awesome!
