I feel ya Bret...When I started playing, I had a decent forehand, so I used to spend hours (by myself) woking on my backhand. Now it is better than my forehand.
The more time you work on shots by yourself, the more natural it will come to you during a game.
For both back- and fore-hand, I stand about 5-6 feet from the back corner bounce the ball against the wall and hit passing shots (straight down the line) and cross-court (corner shots) . Do this for your forehand and backhand over and over as low as you can, and kill shots will eventually be second nature.
There are also some cool drills I found on You tube you can find...once your muscle memory takes hold, it becomes second nature...plus, all of a sudden, you'll start beating the crap out of your buddies that don't practice...I was accused of taking secret lessons one time! HA!
