How can I repair a chipped skeg on my sterndrive?

Well since you are handy, you just cut it off and weld a new one on. Bang it straight grind a little add some paint and you are good to go.

They also make skeg covers that can breathe life back into it. Still might require some grinding.

Why? Not being facetious, but it's for prop protection only and if the chip isn't too big, there is no reason to repair it.

Just file it smooth and you'll be fine.

They do make replacment skegs and you can get them from Overton's, West Marine... ...

I'd only say replace it if the skeg isn't long enough to be below the prop blades.

That make any sense?

Going with what Matt said - try to make sure you file it smooth, and balance it. In other words if you remove a lot of material from the left side file some of the right side away. Not balancing leads to vibration which is hard on trim cylinders, gears and the outdrive seal. I have a pretty good chip in mine where the prop bent and struck it. I am justleaving it alone.
