About a week ago I started doing research on Digital SLRs, as I'm looking to upgrade from my old 35mm Minolta Maxxum. I've read a lot of posts and reviews on the Canon Rebel XTI, Nikon D40x, Canon 20/30d, and Nikon D80. But, I really don't want to spend more than $800 initially on a body/lens kit (I know the kit lenses aren't great, I just need something with my initial investment). I won't be using the camera for any one subject exclusively, just want something that will do well with landscapes, and catching one of my many wipeouts on the water.

On paper, the XTi seems to have most everything I want. However, after playing around with it in person, I can't stand the small size and ultra cheap feel to it...I've read great reviews on the camera, but I just feel like it won't last.

I've read a lot of great things about the Pentax (and I love the fact that it is sealed from the elements), but I don't know much about their lenses.

So, to the knowledgeable folks on this board, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the K10D? Is the in-camera image stabilization functional? Is that an adequate replacement for the motors in some higher end lenses? Also, will I be able to find an adequate selection of good glass once I grow into the camera more?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I would stick with a brand you plan to stay with. The lens are one of the most important and expensive purchases you will make.

Did you see this? They are $589 everywhere else.

I did see that post, thanks. My problem with the XTi's is their build and size...feels too small for my hands, and too much plastic. I prefer how the Nikon and Pentax have a magnesium body as their skeleton, while the Canon exclusively uses plastic. If the build were more solid, I would get the XTi b/c everyone raves about it.

Anyone have any experience with the K10D and Pentax in general?

The Digi Rebel XTi actually does have a stainless steel chassis. Even still, I've heard a few people on here mention how "cheap" it feels.

Do you live near a good pro shop that rents them? That would be the best way to get rid of all the questions that you might have...

I have been shooting pentax since high school. I haven't had any complaints. I bought the ist digital SLR because I already had a bunch of pentax lenses. I don't think you will have too much trouble finding good lenses for the camera. Any of their lenses should work as long as the have the auto aperature setting. The others will work but they can be a pain.

Here's a shootout of the 10MP cameras.
The Pentax fairs really well.
