It was getting a little long.

Met up with Walt last night for some Long Exposure Shots. This place was a little sketchy, but it was worth it.

My first attempt with light trails, I don't think it was dark enough. Drove by the theater on the way home, liked the colors. Nice shots Riley, the last one is sweet.

This palm was a 5 minute exposure.I think I'm going to go back and do a 20 minute exposure.

Pretty tough to get everything exposed right in this shot. I'll go back on a full moon and it should be better.

To bad there was a shadow in the shot.

Does most of the stuff you guys post up go through photoshop? I never do, not even levels and stuff, just too busy i guess..... everyone looks good.

Do you guys use photomatix for HDR or do you do legit HDR's?

Long Exposure last summer, got some cool colors

A few from our local boat show this past weekend. Shot these for my friends at CBK Watersports. Sorry they're so small. Kept getting an error that they were too big to post and had to resize and this is what I got when I posted them. Enjoy and C&C welcome.

Pat,
Your first two shots are sick ! You shoot some great stuff.

David,
Those are cool but would be great if you could get a angle so you got the whole reflection of the skater on the ice. Maybe under expose a stop or two so the white's don't blow out.

Thanks for the tips Walt, trying to soak up as much as I can. Got to shoot a snowboarding comp today at PCMR.

Sweet shot David...think about cropping it a little to more more emphasis on Shaun.

I am just learning.. so there are some issues with these.. landscapes not level.. and a couple of focus' are out a little.. plus I don't know how to compress good and not lose quality..
But, I had a great opportunity yesterday to ride with Tino Santori.. I would love feedback/suggestions..

I'd go the other way and shoot it wider so you would have the takeoff/landing/both in the shot. You gain perspective and it reflects what's going on in the photo. If you shoot tight there's no perspective and it's a guy in the sky shot. Pat has posted some good examples of capturing the whole story IMHO.
Old     (helix_rider)      Join Date: Mar 2003       03-08-2009, 1:47 PM Reply
I see your point Walt...and I'm definitely no expert, but I personally kinda like the 'guy in the sky' shots occassionally. And seeing as how he can't go back in time to get more in the photo, I'd rather that photographers head not be in the bottom part of the frame :-)

Randy! Alex's nosepress is insane in that photo! That's crazy! David, those speed skating photos look sweet as well! Short track is really fun to watch. They had the world championships in Minneapolis a few years back. It was a shame to see such an empty stadium though. Very few US fans. The Koreans definitely brought their fans though. There was a whole section of them with flags and drums and everything. By the end of the day I wanted to sit with those guys! HAHA!

Anyway, got a few here. I scanned in some film last week. Some old, some new. Enjoy!

Same hip different angle, shot from behind the takeoff with Park City in the background.

You can see the take of in the foreground, as well as the apex of the hip (start of the landing in the foreground. Park City in the background. It was amazing to see how big these guys go.

Thanks Ryan I wish the press shot was shaper. Great composition on the golf course photo, really like it. When you see Nintzel & Sean (House) tell them I said hey.

David, great shots, the 1st one is sweet, what lens?

Hey Walt here's a couple more speed skating shots that capture the angle you mentioned. I underexposed them and cropped to get the framing I wanted. I never took much notice of the skaters reflection until I read your post.

Thanks Randy. Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS. It was a fun event to shoot, amazing in person how huge these guys go. I am a total newb to the dslr world, and haven't had anything but a point and shoots since the early '90s (nikon 6006 that got ripped off 6mo after I bought it).

I took this one with my Canon SD1100 point and shoot pocket camera. I think it is a pretty cool pic... this is a local fishing hole I frequent. Not bad for a $130 camera IMO. What does everyone think of the composition? I am trying to learn about taking better shots like like this so any suggestions or critiques would be helpful. I can see it may have been cool if I could have waited a bit or rotated so the sun could have been more to the left side of the pic or something.
