Does anyone out there use a new Tacoma (05 or 06) for towing the boat? I've seen the tow ratings for the new ones with the 4.0L V6 come in at 6500 lbs.

This article seemed pretty positive:

I'm trying to find something that will have good MPG for daily driving and still be able to get up the hill...thanks!

my guess is that it would be fine...i know many people that tow with V6's, and this truck has a lot of horsepower for a V6. As long as you're not pulling often/for a long distance, I'd say it'd be just fine...especially if you could get one with a 4.10 rear end...

What are you going to be towing?

Don't know yet...just doing some long-term planning. Most likely, though, it'll be something like a V210 or a Mobius LSV. I like the Tacoma's, though, and I'm just wondering if I can kill two birds with one stone (have a daily driver AND an eventual tow vehicle).

...just to add another note...I have a friend that tows w/ a 2000-2001 (the last body style) 4runner, and doesnt have a problem, though he does complain that it is underpowered for long hauls. However, my guess is that the new tacoma would be much better. (my friend tows an '04 Mobius LSV).

I have an 2004 Tacoma with the V-6 in it. I use to pull my V-210. It pulls ok but slows down about 10 mph going up hill and my gas mileage goes to crap.

I think you will be ok with a 20 foot boat, I don't think power will be much of an issue. I would be more worried about the tranny crapping out after a few years of towing. If you dont plan on keeping the tacoma for 100K+ miles I think you will be just fine.

Where do you live and what is the terrain like?

Right now, I'm in TX (San Antonio), but I'm probably going to be moving back to San Jose in the next year or so. There will definitely be some hills (Altamont Pass, etc).

Personally... I would hold out for the 07 Silverado or Tundra. They will both get about the same gas mileage as a V6 TACOma

20+ highway

I tow a 4000 pound boat with my 05 tacoma. I have towed it from Cincinnati, Ohio to Greenville, SC through the mountains with no problems at all, but gas milage is crap when towing

I have the double cab 2006 Tacoma 4.0 liter and I pull my 20 footer with no problems. One thing though, I am burning up the clutch on steep ramps but I think that is more driver error on my part.
