I know this can of worms might get over done but here goes. I'v been thru one Tahoe, one Yukon and a Suburban. This time i'm leaning towards a Ford Exabition. I know how the Chevus are, any Ford owners with input!!

Are you doing all of the regular maintenance on it? I have never had any problems w/ any of the Chevy's I have owned. Fords on the other hand have all tended to have tranny problems. I am driving a Dodge now, but only because the new Chevy 2500 Quad cabs were about $20K more when I bought it. I'm lovin' it though.

Definite can of worms here. My 2 cents: My suburban blew a tranny and numerous other problems so I have yet to forgive chevy for making that lemon. Unfortunately, I have not met a person who's suburban lasted more than 120k without a new tranny. Perhaps the heat in my area burns them up quicker, I don't know.

I have an 05 excursion with the 6 liter diesel, the tranny issues are reported to be much less. It pulls like a dream.

It does seem like the new Chevy's are getting cheaper looking, or at least on the inside. Probably going to go under in the near future or something.

Love my Chev's. Have a 2004 Tahoe now and it's great. Had 2001 Silverado crew cab 4x4 before that with no problems. My husband's a mechanic and he loves Chev's too. My dad's a ford guy but I'll have to lean over to my husbands side on this one. Oil change every 5000km

I have owned a Taurus, 3 Escapes, an Explorer, and expedition and now an Excursion. the Taurus Escapes and Explorer have all been companiy cars that I put over 75K miles on each. The Expedition had 85K when I sold it and I have 25 on my Excursion now.

Happy to say I have never had one mechanical failure with any one of the Ford I have owned
( knock on wood ) .
I can not comment on Chevy so I wont. But Ford has been good to me over the past 10 years.

Fords sound funny, I had the damn power steering pumps, they always whine as the vehicle gets older. The new GMT9000s are sick and in a class of their own!

Ha I have a runt '97 Ford F-150 4.6 that I i've towed with since it was new. I'll win no race but it pulls my X-star 75 mph with the AC cranked in 100 degree Texas weather. Oh and thats just oil/filter and a couple of minor wear and tear items. It's about to roll 260k. I guess it's the luck of the draw but my Ford is the best damn money i've spent in a long time!

My brother also owns a "miracle" ford. It's a 98 mustang 3.8 automatic with 180K on it. Everything is original including the alternator, water pump, he even ran 108K on a set of tires!!! With that said, I hate riding in the thing, it always feels like the wheels are going to fly off.

My opinion is that you really can't go wrong with these big american irons. These are what american car makers do well. I have a Tahoe and a Silverado right now but I wouldn't hesitate to trade the Silverado in on a F150. The Tahoe on the other hand is probably the best vehicle that I have ever owned. It does whatever I ask of it with grace. It seems to just be the right size in most situations too. We looked at the Expeditions but the back seats didn't fold flat and level for the dog crates so the Tahoe got the nod.

GMC Denali baby... 78K, no problems and I have an extended warranty to 85K. I took it in and told them to go through the tranny with a fine toothed comb because I pull boats and don't want to have to come out of pocket for it in two years. They tore into it and couldn't find anything whatsoever wrong with it. I'm a VERY happy GM owner. Now if I could just get gas prices to go down

Being a life long Ford fan I naturally lean to the side of the Ford, however I recently purchased the new 07 Chevy Tahoe and am absolutely loving it. It is very quiet, smooth, and has good power. The new interiors are a great advancement over the past. So, don't overlook the new Tahoe.

GM all the way. I just traded my 1998 Z71 w/ 112K miles on a new 2500HD Crew Cab. My old Z71 did not give me any trouble. I would have rather had 1500 Crew Cab because of the gas milage difference, but I could not find one....Ford makes a good truck, and I grew up driving Ford trucks, but I like the way the interior is laid out in the GM's a lot better. It's more comfortable across the board to me.

Richard, Have you considered a Toyota Sequoia. I have towed my old Moomba and my new Supra for 2 years and have never had a problem. And the thing I like the most is how well they hold their value.

I'm with insuranceman. Our Sequioa has pulled us over the rockies many many times. Never a single problem. I bleed red white and blue, but I only drive red and white.
I also think the American trucks (non-diesel) are over rated on the HP ratings. See previous posts on this subject and my F250 superduty vs. Sequioa story....

For american trucks, I think diesel is the only way to go. I have driven all 3 in 3/4 ton. The cummins is probobly the strongest but dodge's tranny is kinda weak for the torque of the Cummins, but I heard they are using Allison trannys this year, chevy also uses the Allison tranny. Ford I think uses there own transmission. For some reason I still like the F-250.

I've had my '98 F-150 since new with a 4.6L which towed a SAN from Florida to PA no problem. Although I love my truck, I think the Chevy's have a much nicer ride and quality feel. If I was buying new, I would go GM, but I plan on driving my Ford for at least another 10 years-if possible.

I've had the pleasure of owning 2 Tahoes, an Excursion and now an Expedition. The Tahoes were fine vehicles when just driven as a daily driver, but when you put a boat behind them, they were less than stellar. The leaf spring suspension swayed, and even with air bags, the truck felt light in the nose while towing.

The Excursion was the king of towing for SUV's. I had the 6.8l V-10, and I got 12 mpg around town, on the highway and 11 when towing. You could tow just about anything anywhere with that truck. The downfall was the leather seats weren't as long lasting as the rest of the interior, and the truck is a 3/4 ton vehicle and rides very firm. As a salesman with clients, this was not always the best thing when going out to lunch with some elderly clients.

The Expedition is the best compromise vehicle of all the trucks I've owned. It rides well, and tows pretty well. I hauled my Tige 22V from So. Cal to Texas with no trouble at all. This was loaded down with a family of 5's needs for the first 2 weeks of a move, plus the dog, and all of our necessities for living on a 1300 mile drive. Even while max'ed out on weight, we averaged about 9 1/2 mpg. I would say this was a very good towing truck with plenty of room, and if you ever have more than 5 people in your truck, the rear seat is the only one in it's class an adult can actually sit in for more than a few minutes.
The Expedition is coming out with a facelift this fall, and will also add a new extended version to compete with the Suburban, you may want to wait for the new EL version.

I own one of each....both are good trucks, with very loyal following. Our 03 Suburban 1500 has been great. No problems, tows awesome. My 04 F150 feels very solid, built well, but the 5.4 ltr motor in it feels gutless, doesnt tow as well as the suburban, but does the job (you can also watch the gas gauge move towing). I wouldnt hesitate to buy either, but after the experience we had with the suburban, when it gets tired, and old, I will replace it with another. The truck doesnt get driven much, so Im sure I will still own it in another 10 years...like I said, it just feels solid.

I also wouldnt hesitate to own a Dodge...but I dont care for the styling at this point.

2000 F-250 Diesel with 152K miles. Ford is the truck of choice and it seems in the dallas area F-250 is the truck of choice. I will replace it when Toy comes out with a heavy half diesel.

the sequioa will work , but , i guess we all could wake board behind a i/o all so, my point is they make tow rigs, like F-250 F-350 HD2500 HD3500, so buy the best, just like your boat and then you will know you can get the job done

Discolafinger, In case you didn't notice he is asking about SUV's, not trucks. You have a nice rig and boat but I don't really think it is neccesary to show photos of them on "almost" every photo. Just my input but I am sure there are a few more who would agree.

I'm a GM guy thru&thru, so I won't bother to give my opinion, but I like most Fords too except for the ~'97-'03 or whatever F150/250s. I owned a couple of the previous body style Dodges, and wouldn't own another Dodge based on those experiences.

quote:

"The Tahoes were fine vehicles when just driven as a daily driver, but when you put a boat behind them, they were less than stellar. The leaf spring suspension swayed, and even with air bags, the truck felt light in the nose while towing"

What year Tahoe did you have? If you had the old ~'93-'00 body style, I totally agree. Now, however, all have 4-link coil rear suspension and many have autoride (airbags). They offered autoride on the older ones too, but it really shines with the newer rear suspension.

This is not to say they're the best tow vehicles on the road, and I wish like hell they'd build a diesel version, but they're worlds ahead of the old body style. You get a nice ride unloaded, and stability when loaded. The 5.3L motor is fine for most normal size (not X80) wakeboard boats around on flat TX roads, but might be a little lacking in the mountains I'd think?

Good luck.

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado Z71, my wife has a 2004 Tahoe, and we both love our vehicles. I can pull the boat just fine with either one.

My Dad's company uses Chevrolet vehicles only. The last 2 trucks that he had, they put over 200,000 miles on each one with out any major mechanical problems. My Dad's current Tahoe has 160,000 on it, and still going strong. Never had to replace anything except a headlight.

My new Dodge 2500 Diesel is great for towing the new boat and all of my other trailers. Another plus to it is the mirrors fold out 90 degrees so they become tow mirrors. Supposedly they have the kinks worked out of their transmissions. I have put about 20K on it since I bought it in September and haven't had any issues yet, knock on wood. Great truck for the $$$.

Alright I had an F250 and traded it in for a duramax because I heard numerous complaints about the 6.0l when I bought it.
When I got the duramax I gotta sqeak near the passenger door at 6,000 miles from regular driving, after about 3 weeks it sounded like a cricket was living in my door. I traded it in for a 04.5 (new body style) F150 fx4 the week they were released into dealers. Recently traded it in for a titan xe and regretted trading it in because of the titans ugly interior. After two weeks I decided to trade it back. Im back to an 05 f150 supercrew lariat and couldn't be happier. With a K&N and magnaflow side exit it hauls!
When someday someone makes a better midsize pickup than the F150, then maybe I'l trade in.

Yeah, Gator could have gone ahead and put a Cummins in that F250 and be a lot of money ahead at this point. The new F150s are very nice, though.

I've heard of rearend problems with the Titan platform, has that been fixed?

Ford! Have a 2002 WITH A Powerstroke with all the Banks goodies and it will push you back in the seat. It is a pulling machine. I have a 1992 Ford diesel with 208,000k on it it halls 10k on its back everyday and still runs strong with hardly any repairs. My good Friend has a Powerstroke and the new Chevy and he says when a want a soft ride I drive my Chevy when I need to work I drive the Ford!

I've noticed some with Titans with cooling fins on the diff cover, and some without.

Toyotas and Nissan build great vehicles, but I agree with someone above who said something like fullsize trucks are the one thing that US carmakers do right.

Holy moly.... I was wrong! My brothers V6 Ford has 267K on it, still running strong, however I still preffer my Chevy. I think they are both good trucks. If I were to get a ford it would have to be an F250 diesel. I don't care for the look of the F150

Thanks all for the input. My Suburban lasted 135k with a new tranny and rear end at 90k. My Yukon lasted 165k with no problems and my Tahoe now has 110k and needs some work. Thaks especially to the Chevy and Ford owners who have both. At work we always had Fords this is why the change. Something different so i'm taking delivery of an Expedition on Sat. Thanks again for all the input..

The GM/FoMoCo big SUV's are comparable in every way except one.
You cannot get a Suburban or any GM SUV with a diesel. It is an option in the big Excursion from Ford.
Both thee companies are really trying for your business right now, if you are buying new you can find some decent deals out there. I have had both over the years. In the late 60's early through the late 70's GM, in my opinion, had the edge. In the 80's they were all searching for ways to meet emissions and give you the options, ride, etc. that the buying public wanted. In the 90's Ford regained the marketplace and had the edge. The 6.0 Powerstroke has had some serious teething problems, but the gas trucks are still selling like hotcakes. Chrysler has the best diesel out there with the Cummins, but they have always struggled to put a good truck around it. They were last to get into the crewcab, and never did go after the large SUV market.
If GM was ever to put the Duramax in a Suburban, it would be a seller.
If Chrysler was to design a larger version of the Durango and offer it with a Cummins, it would be a seller as well.
Go drive the Fords, and then figure out which dealer that would do the potential warranty has the best rep. It may really come down to that.
A good Ford with a crappy dealer can ruin the experience. Same with GM.

Yes, they re dscontinued, but with things being as they are a nice used one might be the way to go.
I am happy my '97 F-350 CrewCab longbed dually with the Powerstroke. Hauling a 4200lb cabover camper and towing my '98 SkiSanger DLX, I get 12 or 13 miles per gallon at 60 MPH on flat ground.
A comparable gas truck would get around 8 under similar circs. I know, I had one...

Owned a 2002 GMC Yukon Denali and that was in the shop Every Month for two 1 1/2 years untill I dumped that headache that I called a vehicle. I now own a 2003 F150 and can't complain once. The car has had no major issue and the service that ford gives to its customer is awesome. Ford get my Vote and also it looks good with the boat. Upload

I have had two cheap ass but reliable tow vehicles, an '89 F150 with 200k on it that I traded to get my house painted (big house) and a '96 Bronco with 249K on it, still pulls fine original engine and trans. AC still works. The '89 went to Mexico, it's still running down there from what I hear. I've heard horror stories about both Ford and Brand X, but I've had nothing but good luck with every Ford (17)I've owned. Well, except that '92 Taurus wagon.....;) 16 outa 17 isn't bad.
