I can help but wonder if something better (if that is possible) is coming out soon.

Sparky, Yes I did see it. Got a message from them too. I am going to go ahead and send it in for a free upgrade. My Dad is wanting it for his boat, so I already told him he could have it... then this came along, so pulled the trigger. Thanks for the heads up!

There are 4 of these on the WakeWorld Toys fot Tot's auction right now... might as well make it go to a good cause.

I think your right, but $150 sounds like a great deal. I always wished they would combine a HSE Revolution and a WS420 into one unit.

And $125 is an even better deal because that's the actual price. Maybe in the future Wetsounds could evolve the WS420 with an automated volume control in a one piece model and I'm sure it could be done cheaper than buying two pieces.

125 plus 31 for the tach signal generator (08 and down Mercruiser) plus 30 for RCA's (unless they are included) and you're up to 185, but half off is great no matter how you slice it!

Aaaah, I see. My boat didn't need the extra signal generator. It's wired to the tach.

I just did a quick google search and found the same tach signal generator for around $20 after shipping.

Where did you find that Tach module for $20?

Do you need it? I've got a 08 Wakesetter, but on the Earmark site it mentions something about Malibu?

What difference does it make with the install?

Thanks

You don't need it to install on a malibu unless you aren't comfortable tapping the tach wire.

The service manager at one Malibu dealer discouraged his customers from tying into the tach wire. The HSE tach input has a seriously high impedance so I don't see any issue. However, I wrote that item in the HSE product information so that if a boat owner encountered this same caution from any boat manufacturer or service entity that they would know there is always an alternative method that is completely safe regardless. Again, I see no issue with a Malibu.

I have an '05 Sanger V215 do I need to buy the tach signal generator also for it to work?
Old     (david_e_m)      Join Date: Jul 2008       12-02-2010, 8:52 AM Reply
Dave,
Based on the info on our site which is direct from HSE on this application you will most likely need the tach signal generator. It simply clamps on to the alternator output which is the cable that runs from the alternator to the battery (impossible to mis-identify).

Dave, I have an 06 and needed the signal sender. I tried just about every gray wire under the dash with no luck.

I bought one last year and it's worth every penny! On sale is even better!

Speaking of the WS420, David, when are you going to have that on sale?????

Sorry to hijack...

I have been wanting one of these, but don't really have anywhere to put it. Is it a out of sight out of mind component? Meaning I could hide it under the observer seat?
Old     (hillbilly)      Join Date: Aug 2002       12-08-2010, 1:27 PM Reply
You could hide it, But there is a knob you can use to turn the volume up or down while muted. As long as you don't care about messing with the volume once it lowers hide it.
Old     (HighVoltage)      Join Date: Aug 2010       12-09-2010, 8:21 AM Reply
I'll be hiding it under the dash or the throttle. Easy reach if you need to adjust it but out of the way for everything else.

David - Got mine the other day - thanks. On an 05 Sanger V210, the batteries are in the back, so I'm running from the back all the way to the front? (seems like a "duh" question but want to be sure)
Old     (david_e_m)      Join Date: Jul 2008       12-10-2010, 2:00 PM Reply
Tom,
I'm not exactly sure what you are saying. If you are intending to use the signal generator accessory then you want to gain access to the alternator output close to the alternator rather than the battery as a minor amount of cable resistance could impact the generator function since the device is magnetic based. As far as I know there has never been an issue if you follow this course. I hope I understood your question correctly.

David - The signal generator seems to have several options to connect the tach signal (at the alternator). Do you know which one I should use? I live in the northwest and wont get the boat out of the garage for 6 months, so cant run it to figure out which connection to make for the signal. Do you know which one I should use, or do I need to wait till Im on the lake and trial and error it? Thanks!

Hi Derek,
On the signal generator, you have some wires to pair up which is to adjust how many poles you have in your alternator to get a pulse count similar to the engine. During my testing and evaluation of the unit on my boat I paired the white and orange. I hooked up a tack to the signal wire from the generator and it was fairly close to the actual engine RPM's. The pulse generated is not critical since you can program the volume control to engage/disengage at any RPM you desire so it is only looking for a condition to operate. If the signal generator is creating a pulse different than the engine RPM it will not have an adverse affect since you can program it to your liking. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Jim Aikins

David,

I worded my question wrong, and I realize I'm going to answer my own question - I need to attach properly at the alternator and then run the wires up to the HGE which is mounted under the dash up front?

SangerTom,
That is correct.
Jim,
Thanks for the concise explanation. Very good language for all concerned.

The Signal Generator also says that it needs to be connected to a constant "fused" 12V power source but doesn't come with a fuse (or fuse holder).

What would be the proper fuse for it?

Thanks

What was everyone else using for a fuse?

Derek, yea we are done here for the winter. It hasn't been above freezing for weeks.

But, the boat is in the attached garage and I am going to try to get the HSE installed while I am home for Xmas break. Unfortunately I won't get the chance to use it for a few months.

At least I get to work on it!!

ship_of_fools,

You will probably get a faster/better response by contacting Directed Electronics (the manufacturer of the tach signal generator) directly. I think you should be able to contact them using the link below. The part number for the tach signal generator is 454T.
