I have a Ryan single axle trailer and I was looking at replacing the brake shoes, replacing the backing plates and a hub. The shoes are not real worn at this time. When I bought the boat and trailer the trailer was missing the left barring buddy. The hub is so worn the a new barring budding won't stay in place. I packed and replaced the bearings about 500 miles ago.

Is this something that a novice can approach them self's?

It sounds like your drum might need to be replaced also. You can buy a drum and brakes already assembled from a lot of places for around $100 per side. All you need to do is install, replace break line and bleed. This should take about 30 minutes per side.

If you don't need to replace the drums, it is still a pretty easy job, but will take more time and is just a bit messy if you are going to repack the bearings.

You can also upgrade to disc breaks pretty easily.

Troy,

Thanks, I will look into the assembly kit. It sounds like the way to go.

This is a pretty good price for disc brakes and a significant upgrade, You will recoup the money in resell value.

Replace the master cylinder also and disks are the way to go.
