Does anyone know how to make a photo black and white and then make just certain items pop out in color? For example, a pic with a rider behind a boat, turn whole pic black and white, make rider and boat in their respective colors???? thanks for any help.

Walt,

Are you using the magic wand to select on a separate layer technique?

Rich,

No I'm not but I probably should be. I was doing them by hand with the brush tool.

I was just curious as it's a technique that I haven't ever actually tried but can visulize a number of potential ways of doing it with PS.

I'm sure it would be much faster but I kind of have fun doing with the brush tool.

Are you desturating the entire layer and then painting the color back in or just desaturing via the brush tool on all the areas you want B&W?

I do it with layers...One layer in B/W over one Layer in color...with a magic wand I remove the B/W image I want to "pop" in color...But I am terrible at PS.

Rich,

I'm de-saturating via the brush tool on all the areas I want B&W.

You should try using an Adjustment Layer with Channel Mixer set to Monochrome, then paint on the adjustment layer. That will give you the most flexibility later.

The method that I have found most effective is to do the following:
Create new layer from original, desaturate the top layer (or as Mike mentioned you can use the monochrome in the channel mixer, which gives you more control over the blacks and whites), apply a quick mask mode to the desaturated layer. Now on the quick mask mode that is on the desaturated layer you can paint with either a black brush or a white brush to reveal or hide the lower (color) level.

I like this method as you can always go back and correct any areas you might have gone outside the line by just painting with either black or white. Just keep in mind that you have to be on the layer mask while doing the painting. This is also the method I use for my sequence shots... works great.

anyone have any tricks or software for doing this with video? The way I did it was fairly painstaking.

like suggested by russell, use layer masks. they will give you move control over the image.

I copy the layer in PS and paste on top then use the eraser tool.
