First Pictures with my new D50

Got to luv the new DSLR's. For $600 you get alot. I have been used to the point and shoots, but wow. My old Olympus P&S was a highly rated camera but is not even in the same category. This was the first time out this year, the water in the 70s (finally) and the first shot with my new Nikon D50. I am amazed as ussual. To give you an idea of how easy it is to use, my wife took the pictures and she doesn't even know how to turn it on!

What lenses are you using? did you get the kit lense/lenses?

what's the spec on the kit lens? is it the same as what came w/ the d70 (18-70mm 3.5-4.5)?

I bought the camera with the 18-70
My NAS (nikon aquisition syndrome) kicked in an I also bought a 70-210D. The pictures were with the 70-210

Looks like maybe that first pic was taken with something a little wider than 70mm?

the first pic is significantly wider than 70. its at 18mm to be exact, and at f3.5 so joe it might very well be the lens you mentioned...

ya I just got a new eos 20d yesterday with a 70-200mm 2.8L lense it works pretty sweet, nice pics where at?

yes your are right. The first was with the 18-70. I forgot we changed lenses for the wakesurfing.
The lense is the D70 Kit lense. I would like to have the nikon 70-200 2.8. Just don't have the spare $1000+ they want for it.

hey im going to be getting a d50 and im thinking of going with the 18-55 dx and 55-200 dx lens in a kit. im super pumped to get it.

i was wondering if anyone knows anything about these lenses?

also scott just wondering but how did you know exactly waht the specs were of his lense from the picture.

I bought my D50 on ebay from a seller named Canoga camera. I got the 18-70 with it with a 1 gb memory card, nikon bag two year factory warranty, a UV filter and some other small stuff. The seller is out of the US and is a Nikon dealer. When the sale was over and I won I called the dealer and bought it over the phone with a credit card. That way they can sell it with full warranty. US goods, not grey market. I gave less then $800 for everything. They sell lots and lots that way. I have been very happy with mine. The 18-70 is generally considered a better quality lens than the 18-55, they are both less expensive lenses. I haven't used the 18-55. As far as the 55-200. It is also considered an entry level lens. I am sure it will work well though. I later bought a Nikon 70-210D used, also on ebay for around $250. I know what I have takes beautiful pictures. I am sure the kit lens will be nice also. Around 130mm is perfect for close up wake pictures, The 70-210 is great for action pictures as long as you have good daylight. Here are a couple more to help with the decision. The second one is a waterfall more that 100' tall. The resolution was cut by about 1/4 to get them to upload. The real thing is much better.

the lens you have are they the ones with the kit because i have looked at the kits and none of them come with the lens you have. i went to a local store today and they said the 18-55 lens was the better lens of the 2 kits offered being a 100 dollars more for the kit with this lens over the other one.

but neither kit had a 18-70 like you have i think

The 18-70 is the kit lens for the D70s. You can get it with the D50 from certain dealers if you look around.

oh thats what i thought. i have been seeing what both people have been saying about the 2 lens.

alot of people say the 18-55 lens is an upgraded kit lens which is an ED lens. some say it is just as good as the d70s lens or better. they are probably very similar. i wonder what kind of lens it is.

William if you right click on a picture then click on EXIF or somethign similar it gives the info for the shot. If you dont have an EXIF option when you right click you may need to DL a program. They are free. Not borrowed free but real free. http://ak.no-ip.com/ for the one i use.

David i have been looking for a kit with the 18-70 lens and d50. i cant find any on ebay do you know the seller you got it from and maybe he has some because i dont want to pay 200 plus for lens when i can get a similar lens for much less in a kit.

I picked up a D50 3 weeks ago for some wakeboard shooting. Have never really been into photography untill i got into boarding. Girlfriends dad had Nikon 24-120 Lens he let me have. Shoots some sweet shots, just trying to figure it all out.

I have a D50, which I got with the 18-55. I actually prefer the 18-55 to the 18-70. The 18-55 is half the weight of the 18-70 and half the price. I prefer the zoom action of the 18-55, which seams more linear than the 18-70. The one thing I wish the 18-55 had is the ability to adjust the focus manually when in auto focus mode.

If I were starting from scratch I'd get the 18-55 and save my money for a longer lens to complement it(esp for wakeboarding), and a fast normal prime.

what i don't like is how the backgrounds are sooooo blurry, it almost makes the pics look like they are cropped in !! keep the background in a semi-focus to make it look more real!

well i think the last picture was intended to have a blur as the background which creates a sense of motion and speed. the technique used is called panning where you follow your subject.

i think it looks cool especially when done right

William is right and panning adds a sense of movement to a shot. At a faster shutter speed the shot can look static.

both those shots are awesome but give a total different feel to picture. the second picture there is no sense of movement what so ever. for all you know the kart could be stopped completely when the picture was taken.

sweet. i having such a hard time waiting for Nikon D50 im just going crazy.

im getting the 18-55 and 55-200 ED lens. they aren't the best but im fairly new with photography but im lerning more and more stuff everyday researching and reading information. i though these lens would give me a good range for shooting at a reasonable price until i found out what other high end lens i think i will want.

but im looking into other accesories for the camera and was thinking of a 50mm f/1.8, a UV and Polarized filters, and either a monopod or tripod. i was wondering what you all have either the mono or tri and what woould i get more use out of thanks

I just got the 18-200 VR lens for my D50, no action shots yet. If anybody needs a case for their D50 mine is up for grabs.

correct me if i'm wrong, but the vr doesn't really help much (very little) when taking riding pics. from what i understand, it's great in low-light situations, but really undistinguishable in normal situations.

the VR helps more when doing low light shots with slower shutter speeds. It also helps to use more batteries. With the high shutter speeds of riding shots, i dont think it makes a difference.
