stereo hookup no power??

So I bought the Poineer DEH-P5000UB, and in the back there's both a yellow wire and a red wire. The deck I'm replacing only had one red wire. What do I do with the yellow? My first attempt/guess (tape it off) has resulted in zero power to the unit.

Generally there's a bunch of extra wires coming out of the boat since there used to be a pretty big system in there that was removed before I bought it. The deck I'm replacing (an aquatronics CD deck) was working when I took it out, and I've matched up all the same wires.

Any ideas what I did wrong?

Red is usually battery. Black is ground. Yellow or orange is ACC. Hook it to a switch, or your key, or if you really don't want to worry about it, splice it in with the red.

Will that drain my battery? Apologies if that's a laughable question. I like the idea of "not worrying about it" especially since there's already about 5 wires going to the battery right now... and I suck at electrical.

Best advice, especially since you say you suck at electrical. TAKE YOUR BOAT TO THE NEAREST STEREO SHOP AND HAVE IT PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED.

It may. Especially if you do what I did. I had mine wired to the battery. Had the stereo on mute (thought it was off). Was camping woke up the next morning, with two dead batteries. So, either make sure you turn it off every time, or wire it to ACC. Wiring to ACC is actually easier than you may think.

or you can wire the yellow to a switch. that way you can jam with the boat turned off.

Why don't you wire the yellow to the factory circuit breaker for you stereo. That is how it is done on my Malibu.

Lol, thanks guys - if I knew where the factory circuit breaker was ,that'd be a great idea. Good news is that the yellow/red splice worked like a charm. I'll make sure the stereo is off when not in use for now, and then have someone with more electrical smarts than me look at it next week.

Just couldn't bear the thought of an entire weekend with no tunes (especially after I spent a few hours installing everything).

Yellow is constant hot
Red is switched hot
Black is ground

The posts above have red/yellow swapped.

SJ put the red on an accessory switch if you don't want to have to turn the deck off every time.

I just installed a stereo in my malibu and had the same questions. I had a constant power from the battery, and a switch on the dash. I wired both the red and yellow from the deck to only the switched power so I won't have too worry about draining the battery. I only ensure that my stereo dash switch is turned off. The only downside is that my stereo doesn't have memory, but I don't care because I am only using my Ipod.

there is no reason to have your yellow wire switched, it won't drain your battery.

The red and yellow are together on the switch... so I don't need my key... seems to be working great.

When I have some extra time I'll move the yellow to the battery so I can set the clock.

If you switch your power wire your head deck won't remember any of it's settings. Hook it straight to the battery, run a new wire it's easy as.
