I think I'd rather be seen in those wake pants than in a full suit with no boardshorts, but either way I'm going to have to insist all cameras be stowed in their original and upright position!
Old     (clearlakescott)      Join Date: Apr 2007       01-30-2008, 5:07 AM Reply
guess it is all a matter of preference because I was going to say wearing shorts over your wet suit. Only in wakeboarding does that happen.

f-f-f-f-f-f-F-F-F-F-FASERS-S-S-S-S-S-s-s-s-s!!!!!!!!

They were supposed to help soften the landing but all they actually did was create a pocket of air around your huge dagger fin and make the board super slippery.

why don't surfers or scuba divers wear shorts over their wetsuit?
Old     (spin2win)      Join Date: Feb 2006       01-30-2008, 7:23 AM Reply
no body sees scuba divers. Scuba divers are so ugly they hide underwater. Surfers do on the spring suits.
Old     (jarrod)      Join Date: May 2003       01-30-2008, 7:26 AM Reply
They're not wearing a vest. Got to keep it proportional.

"why don't surfers or scuba divers wear shorts over their wetsuit?"

I think the difference is the life jacket. Since surfers don't wear a vest the full wet suit with no board shorts looks fine. Add a vest to that and it looks like you're not wearing any pants.

All this talk about the need for board shorts over a wetsuit because of not wanting to see anyone's package is a bunch of BS. Why? because I don't think anyone's package is going to show through 3mm neoprene in 55 degree water. Can you say shrinkage?
Old     (denverd1)      Join Date: May 2004 Location: Tyler       01-30-2008, 7:27 AM Reply
because scuba divers have a helluva lot more to think about than staring at another diver's package.

Q: why don't surfers or scuba divers wear shorts over their wetsuit?

A: Three digit IQ's

Wearing shorts over a wetsuit is retarded. If you feel like taking the suit off do you wear another pair of shorts under it?

I have worn board shorts over mesh shorts surfing before during a bad case of surf rash. haha

Why do we grab? Poke? Shift? Ride with style?

Every wakeboarder is concerned with looking good out there. No shorts looks STUPID! That's why.

you look like a ballerina when you wear a fullsuit and no shorts with a life vest on. it's silly.

not on me, I look awesome without shorts.
Old     (proho)      Join Date: Aug 2005       01-30-2008, 8:35 AM Reply
shorts over a full suit is stupid.

are vests really that thick that it makes you look unproportional?? so after your done riding you get into the boat and take off your vest and shorts so you can still be proportional, and put them back on when you want to ride again???
Old     (jarrod)      Join Date: May 2003       01-30-2008, 8:35 AM Reply

how come surfers don't want to look super cool and stylish?

ah, the vest thing. so if you don't wear a vest, hypothetically speaking, you don't need shorts?!?

Andy, what is the difference between a phaser & a chevron? I thought they both were to try and loosen up the ride by creating turbulence.

Another lame fad that didn't take off (hehe) was the wake sail thing that made your tower like 20 feet tall.

What about honeycomb boards? Gator & Byerly's pro model Flight 69s had a tiny patch of honeycomb in a foam board, because Hyperlite made HC a buzz word.

2. Bashing raleys, nuclear grabs, etc...

3. Even caring about what other people think is lame...

the hyperlite "can opener" on byerly boards was a bad trend, or was it a fad? who made that? byerly or the guys that started ronix?

I thought the byerly "can opener" thing was cool. I'm thankful that someone tried to change the shape of a wakeboard. At the time, they were beginning to all look the same.

But, I didn't like the way the board rode.

Alright....one of you surfers post up a picture of you wakeboarding with a wetsuit and vest / no shorts. I need a good laugh.

Just playin fellas.

Big Heavy

There is a HUGE difference between a Phaser and a Chevron. The Idea of the Phaser was to cushion on impact, The Delta base on the 07/08 O'brien line is the same concept they use on the base of off-shore racing boats. It creates a channel of air through the base of the board to create less friction and there fore speed the board up, not make it looser. Go ride and Natural and check it out for yourself, it has to one if not "the" fastest 3-stage board on the market.

Not so much wakeboarding, but more so the look of some of today's wakeboarders.....trucker hats worn at an angle and white framed sunglasses.

Sorry, but these are one of those things that 5 years from now those who dig that style now will look back and ask themselves WTF was I thinking?

Kind of like I do when I look at college pictures from 20 years ago and ask myself WTF was I thinking wearing Z. Cavaricci jeans

There were plenty to be seen at the Ft.Worth Boat Show a couple weekends ago. I'm sure there will be just as many at the Dallas show this weekend.

When I surf, i never wear boardshorts over my wetsuit, spring or full. You feel much freer out their with no baggies on. When I wakeboard, I will throw boardshorts over my spring suit, but im in south florida and luckily never really have to worry about wearing one

Thanks Andy, I'd try one if they were in a store, but no such luck. Way back when I bought my LF Free 135. Tony Finn sold it to us at the boat show, he explained their diamond phasers as speeding up the board and clearly Tony emphasized how diamonds are way cooler than round dimples. I bought it, hook line and diamond phaser. I think Tony could sell drugs to the Pope.

Hows this for a fad? Grabs. I mean if Kovak had his way no one would be grabbing. Thanks god that fad stuck.

Board shorts over wetsuits is a very lame trend. Most people laugh at the people doing it now and everyone will be laughing in 5 years.

But ya'll who do it can keep preaching about hating the bulge, skinny legs, or whatever. (I love hearing the silly excuses you guys have for it! )

Steeze was lame from the beginning.

OG was lame from the beginning.

Some of the biggest violators of fads are boat graphics. They seem to jump on the fad too late and wait to long to move on to the next fad.

can opener hyperlite i guess was a fad since no other company copied it to make it a trend. i can see the cool factor for makeing the board look diff from anything else. it just didn't seem really to improve anything.

the current pro rider mustache trend...wtf?

Richard - I agree. The New Era hats with the bill completely straight and the huge oversized glasses. It looks like Flava Flav!

I also don't get why people starting buying skater shoes when they start wakeboarding...and they have never skated in their life. To each his own but it seems strange to me!

How funny was the throw back contest in Pre-Pop. haha, Shane had his long boardies, Byerly had a Hawiian Shirt. Horrell ended up riding with one binding... Murray had his Mayday gloves on.

No trends are bad, at least once its been tried and has been unsuccessful we can all move on to progressing this sport. I'd rather they try the can opener early and get it out the way... we all know it aint coming back!
