That thing is crazy coool! I give that guy major props for doing that himself, and sticking with it for two and a half years! Wow.

It's a nice looking boat, very clean. Really looks like it is plowing a lot of water on pictures where they are slowing down though.

Was waiting for this thread -- no need for added ballast huh? Agreed, looks very clean - hard to see what the wake really looks like though...
Old     (eubanks01)      Join Date: Jun 2001       01-12-2006, 7:21 AM Reply
Look on the front page. Yeah, it almost looks like the nose is going under in the pictures where they are slowing down, but I guess a lot of inboards look like that.

I figured the wake would be bigger than the pictures lead me to believe it was. There are a lot of other factors though in wakes other than the weight of the vessel.
Old     (jcv)      Join Date: Oct 2005       01-12-2006, 7:23 AM Reply
it shouldn't need ballast. the draft is 39", over a foot more than most wakeboats
Old     (cubanismo)      Join Date: Jan 2005       01-12-2006, 8:24 AM Reply
Irregardless of the wake's size, I imagine that guy is the proudest boat owner on the lake. Mean props!
Old     (stanfield)      Join Date: Mar 2004       01-12-2006, 8:32 AM Reply
Jeff, I was thinking the same thing. Drafts over 3 ft. Couldn't launch that thing where I do when it's low.

Boat looks wicked cool though, major props to anyone that just decides to build their own.

I'd bet it's solid as a rock in the chop.

Very impressive boat, talk about DIY. And at 6000lbs, no need for a ballast system!

THat is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while.
Old     (kevin_bird)      Join Date: Dec 2002       01-12-2006, 10:36 AM Reply
thats is crazy. How much did it cost total in the end? and how many man hours went into it? This guy must know his stuff really well to jump into a project like that.
Old     (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-12-2006, 10:54 AM Reply
I especially like the idea of the turbo diesel motor. Kinda surprised other boat companies haven't gotten on that yet.

All in all a very clean job, although I can't imagine it ending up being too much cheaper than just buying a used boat (at least in this country).
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       01-12-2006, 10:58 AM Reply
Thats awesome.

Kinda puts boat companies to shame.

The motor is so far forward it allows for great seating in the back. But, the boat also looks nose heavy. Are you putting ballast in the back?

I am wondering how bad rust issues will play out over time?
Old     (tedesco)      Join Date: Jan 2006       01-12-2006, 11:58 AM Reply
I was thinking just that. If you add materials and man hours it probably came out more expensive than a used boat, but on the other hand doing it all by himself was a great accomplishment.
Congratulations man, parabéns!

I can't even build a BLT with out F'ing it up, let alone build a boat. Skillz and dedication! Need to bring that to a boat show. Good luck trailering that any where? Over all, very impressed.

I like the rear interior configuration, impressive overall to say the least.
Old     (jonm)      Join Date: Jan 2002       01-12-2006, 12:44 PM Reply
That is an awesome accomplishment. Unbelievable.

I am way too lazy for something like that. I might have just got a second job in the evenings and bought a boat with the earnings. I would never enjoy it as much he will that beauty though.

I have often thought a metal skin below the rubrail on the hull of a boat would be unique, maybe I think that because my gel coat is so faded though.

Hands down one of the coolest boats produced, 6k dry weight with a deisel and good seating, he did it right for sure. I bet he really realized he did it right when they asked him to use his boat to town the brazilian open.
Old     (ridetilldeath)      Join Date: Oct 2005       01-12-2006, 4:17 PM Reply
yea props to him
except ill bet it cost more money than a used boat! im guessing 20,000-30,000. although he has the bragging rights! i mean c'mon, anyone who is not amazed by seeing a guy build his own boat from the ground up needs shot!
Old     (bill)      Join Date: Feb 2001       01-12-2006, 4:18 PM Reply
someone please tell the guy the interview not over until we get some more info and pics :-) ..I want to know how much it cost to build and defintly some still shots of the wake from the side view with rider standing next to it plus some video of the riders throwing something off of it..Also a good shot of the bottom of the boat.IM not asking much but this needs to be addded in a follow up interview .

Nice job though looks like an 80s model nauty .I give him kudos for all the effort and it looks great....

Alright, that's two who have taken it upon themselves to build their own boat. How many others could be doing this?
Old     (sylv2080)      Join Date: Jun 2004       01-12-2006, 5:52 PM Reply
Yeah I really like that seating!!! That is about the same seating as the Malibu XTi21 and XTi23!!! Awesome seating....if you are like me and have to have a DD on our lake...no V-drives allowed!!!!!! MAJOR DOWNER! Yeah the diesel motor would be sweet!!!!!

thats the coolest build up i've seen in a long time. beats 4x4 buildups by a long shot in my opinion. now thats a rewarding project! i hope to be able to do that some day. noone is going to be able to brag to him about their boat ever again.

Great job!!!

Too bad he already named it, though. That'd be a good thread.

This is completely impressive! I wonder what type of experience this guy has had before this project with boats, or engineering, etc? I bet this thing is just a tank! I wonder how impervious this boat would be to hitting things underwater, probably a bit more resistant to damage than a glass boat!

Props!

i rode on it, its a pretty amazing boat considering that he built it himself, its got a nice wake aswell compared to most of the normal brazilian ones.

Wow.. I'm his brother and I just saw this tread today! Thanks to Jonathan.. Tomorrow I'll tell him about this and I'm sure that he will be very glad to answer all your questions... We have a lot more pics and some videos. I know a lot of things about the boat, but i think he can speak better than me!

More wicked than this boat are the guys behind the boat. They represent the true spirit of the wakeboarding. All things in this boat are perfect and it´s home made!!! Brazilian way!!!

Why we need the american´s boats if we have the Ely´s Family!!

Great job on the build...truly amazing effort.

The only thing that would concern me is this:

Ride hard!

Peace

The boat weighs 6000lbs, and he's powered by a v-6 diesel? Doesn't that seen odd. And his tower is a direct copy of the flight control tower, even the board racks. The boat looks like a super air. Again, somethings odd.

Some questions that I saw above:

wake: it is very big because of the weight. you know, more ballast in the boat, bigger the wake. try in your boat to put ballast and you will see.
of course, there is a important feature: the shape of the bottom of the hull. I have studied a lot of boats before build the free rider.

draft: the draft of free rider is bigger than the other wake boats because of the size of the propeller + the weight of the boat, but the main factor is the size of the propeller, diameter 19".

cost: about US$25K but you have to consider that I built all with my father. it is cheaper than hire people.

rust: there isnt rust in the boat, I´m riding with free rider more than one year and i didnt see any trace of rust in the boat. it is important to say that I use the boat only in fresh water. and I dont get out the boat of the water, the boat stays in garage on the water. always floating on the water. It is very cool, I dont have lost of time and work to put the boat on the lake, just call friends, go riding.

That's so awesome, you are my new hero Good job! It looks like a lot of fun, and even more so when you can actually say you built the entire thing!
Old     (bigshow)      Join Date: Feb 2005       01-24-2006, 3:11 PM Reply
Ryan, that's an I-6 diesel. What's odd about that, the weight or the diesel? I would guess that the weight is largely due the steel hull. The diesel probably weighs about the same as a gas V-8. A diesel should have very good torque, a very good power package choice.

It would be interesting to hear if Fabio has tried wake surfing on his awesome boat, though it might be difficult to weigh a 6000 pound boat to make it list for wake surfing.

It does look like a Nautique, but that is what is awsome about it. I mean they are good looking boats. He said it was a 6 cylinder but from the looks of it it's an I-6. Same thing dodge runs so you know it will push that little 6k

questions:

Its a I-6 engine, the weight of the engine + gear is about 700Kg (I dont know in pounds because we dont use pounds here in Brazil).

I have never tried to wakesurf behind.

Fabio -

What is the top end speed?
Old     (wakescene)      Join Date: Feb 2001       01-25-2006, 12:03 PM Reply
700Kg converts to just over 1500lbs.

Amazing job Fabio! Keep posting pictures and video, we all want to see more of your creation.
