Not sure if fellow new yorkers are aware of this. Cliff-notes version: boats under 21' may be required to WEAR life jackets from Nov through May. I worry this may be a slippery slope. Why not boats under 30'? We could save even more lives if we did it all year . . . etc. Apparently the bill is not getting much support for or against, so if you care at all, give your feedback. Your own representaion is a first logical step, but I have also included the sponsor's sites as well.
"(Ninth Eastern Region) Reports Senate Bill S3951/Assembly Bill A8928: Departmental legislation requiring the use of Personal Floatation Devices on pleasure boats less than 21 feet in length while underway between November 1st and May 1st was prepared by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and subsequently sponsored by Senator Mary Lou Rath (S3951). The bill has advanced to a third reading in the senate which is generally viewed as a positive step toward possible enactment. On June 5, 2007 Assemblyman Darrel J. Aubertine agreed to sponsor the legislation in the Assembly (A8928). Although the NMMA endorses this legislation as a common-sense safety requirement in cold-water states, there is not much in the way of significant support either for or against the measure. Final action may occur during the current legislative session that ends on June 21, 2007. However, if the legislation does not come up for a vote during this session it is not likely to be taken up again until 2008."
