any one use a golden rod?

I'm familiar with them in safes where they work well. You'd have to have a pretty big one or multiples in an area where freezing is an issue or if your cover allows too much air exchange.

I used one when I had my boat. What I did was used a bit of coat hanger wire and put it on top of a deal like this: http://www.boatersworld.com/product/338260060.htm I also opened up all of the enclosures in the boat so that air could move around. I also put one of the dry air blowers in my rear locker.

Then on the side of the motor's block, I put a magnetic block heater.

Boat never had a bit of mildew and other than doing the quick block drain (just opening the thumb screews and letting the water out) I never winterized. Living near Seattle it does not get too cold but does stay damp and wet all winter.

I live near Sacramento , not too cold here either. My friend uses one in his sanger 230 which he stores outside. He says he puts it under the engine block, than cracks the engine cover a little. He also uses a can of charcol to collect moisture. His boat mechanic suggested he go this route to save him at least 800 a year instead of winterize. Getting my 1st boat tomorow and wanted to get some tips, but most postings are for boaters that live in freezing temps.
