So after getting burned a second time trying to get a killer deal on the Nikon D200 from shady internet dealers, I'm ready to take the bullet and buy from a reputable shop like B&H. Since they don't have the Nikon D200 in stock but have both Canon 20D and 30D, and also based on some great things I'm being told about the quality of Canon lenses, I'm leaning toward the 20D or the 30D.

As far as the lens, I'm thinking the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for most type of shooting (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx).

For wakeboarding, I understand that the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens is amazing but it's also huge and expensive ($1700), so I started looking at some prime lenses, specifically the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-135mm-f-2.0-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx). It's less than half the price and quite a bit smaller and the 135mm focal length sounds like it'll yield the right picture area for wakeboarding:

Distance to Rider 65ft - 85ft
Yields picture area 11ft - 14ft

Questions:

1. Assuming the 20D is about $200 less, would you go with the 20D or the 30D?
2. What do you think about using a prime lens for wakeboarding? If it makes sense, is 135mm the right focal length?

thanks in advance!

Check out the Canon 70-200L f/4 You can pick it up for about 550.00 to 600.00

I wouldn't use a prime for wakeboarding.

I'm with Walt, as good as the 135 f2L is you'll want a zoom. Shooting the exact same distance all the time from the boat will get boring. If you can afford the 135 then Canon makes a 70-200 f2.8L without IS in near the same price range. It's actually supposed to have slightly better IQ then the IS version. I had one and it's fine for wakeboard shooting and high shutter speeds. Also look at the f4 version Walt (I think) is mentioning it fine as well.

If you're really going to get into the DSLR world hard and use all the features available get the 30D. ISO in increments and spot metering are invaluable and you'll appreciate the increased frame buffer if you are shooting sequences.

type this code in the search category for a slightly better price on the camera. psjl

and for good glass on a budget get either the Canon 70-200 f4L or the Sigma 2.8EX. I use to own the Sigma and now own the Canon 2.8L and the Sigma was just as sharp and colors just as vibrant.

I have heard that as well about the Sigma. How did you find the AF speed? That's the one area I haven't been too pleased with the sigmas I've owned.

Guys, just wanna say "thanks" for all the great advice. I ended up with the 30d, a Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens. Glad you talked me out of the prime lens, I now realize I would have gotten bored quick with it! I'm loving the 70-200mm f/4.0! I'm learning a lot, but just barely scratching the surface still, can't wait to be able to take advantage of the camera's more advanced features. Thanks again!

Alain, was your profile pic taken with the 30d and 70-200? Great shot.
