I use to pay $100 or so on my waverunner also.
I did buy them both new so I don't know if that has anything to do with it,but I know my brother inlaw don't pay squat on his used 02 wakesetter.

It isn't because they are new, I brought my boat from Washington State. I will say it took them two years to track me down, must have been through the DMV, but it shows up every year now. Bastards!

In Sonoma the tax is 1% of the boat value every year.

I moved from California to Texas in June of last year. Riverside County California tracked me down for almost $500.00 of "property" tax on my boat. My issue was the tax was dated for July '05 - July '06. The boat didn't reside in the county during that period, but California law states the boat is owed property taxes if it is in the state on January 1 of the prior year.

My tax attorney tells me this is an issue that has been challenged and has lost in California courts many times. You just have to pay "Taxitforya" fees, or they will attach your real property with a lien. The attorney also tells me that California is the only state that allows counties to operate this way.

In California, the tax is just over 1%--go ahead and pay it--trust me, it can be a big hassle if you don't! If you own the boat on Jan. 1st of that year, you will have to pay tax on it--even if you don't own it when the tax bill arrives.

We live in Sacramento County and got the same informational letter last year. Our bill was about $300 or so.

I think it depends on the county you live in. Not sure when the tax came into effect. Perhaps it's only for boat newer than a specific year and that's why you don't get anything for your other boats.

Use to pay 1.5% yearly, but it was changed this year to an aged based program for boats under 31'(bigger boats still paying 1.5%).
Here is the scheduled....

Vessels 19 feet or more in length but less than 23 feet
Age of Vessel Model Years Uniform Age Based Fee
Less than 3 years 2006 - 2004 $275
3 or more years but less than 6 years 2003 - 2001 $220
6 or more years but less than 9 years 2000 - 1998 $175
9 or more years but less than 12 years 1997 - 1995 $120
12 or more years 1994 & Older $50

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vessels 23 feet or more in length but less than 27 feet

Stanislaus CO. My old Supreme was about $300 a year. Havnt gotten one for my Sanger yet. I have family in Arizona. Thinking about registering it there just to make a point. I dont think I should have to pay extra for my pride and joy so some welfare participant can sit on his butt while I work my a$$ off to pay for my toy.

You don't get lucky when it comes to taxes, lol. It's got to do with age and value and where it's stored.

In Georiga, here it is right from the site below:

Property tax is an ad valorem tax--which means according to value-- based upon a person's wealth. Wealth is determined by the property a person owns.

http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/adm/taxguide/gen/taxation.shtml

You name it, boats, motorcycles, cars, jet ski's and whatever else they can find get's a personal property tax!

About $100/yr on my Waverunner and about $450/year on the boat :-(
