Yup!! Happens during red tide. When you step on the sand when the wave rolls back out you can see it too. SO COOL!

I Thought I Was Stoned Out Of My Mind Back In high School When I Saw These Colored Waves. I Thought It Was From Some Colored Lights Somewhere. 12 Years Later It All Makes Sense!

@Mike no worries! Ironically was born and raised in San Diego where that video was taken. Unfortunately have never seen a red tide first hand though. I didn't even know about them until you posted this and I plugged the term in Youtube. Was kind of stoked to see the video was from my home town though and thanks for the share, red tides are sweeeet!

We were staying in long beach one year when I saw it walking on the beach. We ran back to the rental, grabbed the boards, and went surfing. It was awesome. Def a night I will ever forget. As you paddled out your hands would have blue/green trails in the water. Fish would come up and nip at you fingers. It was hard for my brain to take in what I was seeing.

We get that a fair bit up here on the west coast although not usually with a red tide. Really cool at night especially when you see all of the little mino's scatter and creates all of these little lines in the water. Been swimming in it as well.

Here is a shot I captured last year when it was happening in the Bay Area. I got this in Pacifica.
