I really want to start wakeskating. I tried it once on my friends which was basically a piece of wood with a bit of rubber on top. I think i'm gonna need something with better quality than that. I'm 5ft6 and 105lbs. I've only done it once so it would need to be a beginner board but something that will still be good as i advance. I've been looking at the hyperlite catalyst but i don't know anything about the board. Thanks

The catalyst would be a great board to bet but it is more on the intermediate to advanced level....

I think i'm missing your point. Are you saying that the catalyst isnt a good wakeskate or what?

its a great board for wake to wake riding, but it is very limiting for multipurpose riding. also it is the longest board available. look for something in the 38"-40" range just get a wood or composite concave deck with grip tape and you will be set to have a great time.

my first board was a catalyst 112. it was nice, got me the basics down, and learnt wake to wake pretty easily, but when i wanted to learn more variety of tricks, it was hard to learn on the catalyst compared to others, i still use it for wake to wake here and there, its still a good board, but not for everything. then again, not many boards are

I don't think i'd be doing too much wake to wake stuff, mostly surface tricks. The reason i was looking at hyperlite stuff was I live in Ireland and last time i shipped a board from the US i got killed on shipping.

Also, whats the difference between a bi-level board and a concave board?

since youre in ireland you probably only have access to hyperlite and Liquid force. if thats the case you should check out the Aaron Reed 40" Impulse by LF. Its a wood concave with a good shape. http://www.wakeskating.com/products_info.php?products_id=3648 bilevels give you more leverage for edging and ollieing but react and spin slow. im not a big fan, but some people swear by them.

i wakeboard but ill pull the skate off the board racks for some surface spins and shove its from time to time. more of a screw off set then anything. but i have the liquid force faction. its a "piece of wood with a bit of rubber on top" but it works fine for anything i can do. its the ultimate in begginer. its only 100$ thats the best part. ive been riding it for a year. probably around 40 15 minute sets and its still in perfect tact. im thinking about pulling the foam grip off the top and putting grip tape on it though. good luck

I learned to wakeskate on a Catalyst 2.0 107 ( i believe), I never had any problems with it, its loose for boardslides but edges well with the shank fins. I can do flip tricks and wake to wake tricks on it. Recommend it if you can get one.

I started on the LF Anthem in a 40. Great board for starting out and had a good concave. Sure it's foam top but I recommend starting with it.

I second the Anthem. Not extremely durable but has a nice shape and is forgiving...

I had an 06 and it lasted over two months of me using it for 4-6 hour days, twice a week at the cable hitting sliders... barely scuffed the lam but it did start to get worn away. I feel it was too small and it had a lot of use for what I bought it for.

IMO I wouldn't buy a skateboard with a foam top so why buy a wakeskate with foam ? But then again if you do get a foam top deck that you like and decide you want grip you can always tear off the foam and grip it

I got an '09 catalyst and I love it. I would definitely suggest it because it is easy to ride and the hybrid top provides soft stability and grip when you need it.

Jason, I agree, the hybrid tops are really nice. I actually have one 110 left from 2008 if you dont mind the graphics being from last year. Otherwise they are all the same. Same shape and everything. Check it out here: http://www.waterskis.com/Hyperlite-Catalyst-110cm-Wakeskate-p/hyperlite_catalyst_110_2008.htm

Well... it's still fun to ride. No, it is definitely not the best all around board, but it is unbelievably fun to take on wake jumps. If you don't think it is capable of doing crazy tricks watch a Brian Grubb video. I guess it all depends on personal preference and what you are looking for in a wakeskate and what you would prefer to be able to do on one.
