Canon EF 28-135MM F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Any one use this lens? Do you think it would make a good all around shooting lens?

Thanks for any input.

chas,

just been playing around this weekend with the 17-40 and the 70-200 on a 1.6 crop body.... i really liked the 70-200 alot for a all around lense..

btw, i have read the canon 85 f1.8 prime and and the 100mm is pretty good as a walkaround lense (low light, fast, sharp, and nice bokeh)..only drawback is no zoom)

I had one a few years ago. You might want to check out the Tamron 24-135. As it is, 24mm isn't really that wide on a 1.6 crop body so 28 just doesn't seem wide enough to me (plus I think the Tamron has 10-15% better IQ overall then the Canon). If you shop around they are about $300. I'm using it as a walk around lense on my new XTi. I do miss the IS in low light though. Here's a shot from that combo:Upload

I have this lens. It is ok, but I am planning on replacing it with 24-70 2.8L soon though. I kinda wish I had just gone for the good glass in the first place (same is true for my 75-300 IS). I don't think it is a bad lens, but I really want a faster lens for indoor stuff. Plus, gotta have those red rings!!

You might want to check the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, I had both and I couldn't see any difference in IQ plus the 24-70 L is a fricken tank! To be honest the 24-70L is the most disappointing L lens I have owned to date. I know there are many out there that just love them but I'm not one of them.

I'll give up a little IQ for weight/size/range. The XTi and TaMRON are going to be great to take skiing this winter! I've tried the 28-200 tamron, 28-300 tamron and sigma 18-125, none were anywhere close to this 24-135 IQ wise plus it will work on a FF sensor (although how well remains to be seen!)

One more plug for the XTi, Canon claims it has the 30D AF system and I believe it, focus is just not an issue like it was when I tried the Rebel XT.

Hey Thomas:
I have the 24-70 2.8L and I haven't been extremely pleased with it. For portraiture it works well, for outdoors it always seems the focus is off. I haven't used it outside the studio in some time.

In it's defense, I did drop it and had it repaired at Canon. They said it checked out to specs, but now I'm not so sure.

Gonna send it in again soon.

I recently picked up the 24-105mm f4/L and have been very happy with this lens. I was looking for a lens that would stay on 90% of the time. I found that a lot of the shots I took with my 70-300mm lens were at 85-105mm and seldom did I really even need 200mm. In addition I have the 50mm 1.8 so if I need low light performance I'll with that lens. You can check out a couple recent pics below:

Another lens to check out is the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 it wasn't quite as nice as the Tamron but it's a great range on a 1.6X body. I've seen some killer images from the new Canon 17-55 f2.8 as well. Downside to the sigma and new Canon is that they're only for cropped sensors where as the Tamron 28-75 will work on anything but if you know you're going to stick with Canon's cropped sensor bodies that's not a big deal.
