I'm looking into do an amp upgrade this spring. Right now I have a JL e6450 amp powering the 4 tower speakers (Polk MMC650) and the sub (Polk MM104).

I would like to get more out of the tower speakers as they are difficult to hear at 80ft. Suggestions?

For the sub, I am leaning towards a JL mono amp as I already have the remote bass control. Is the E1400 enough? Other suggestions?

thanks guys.

Budget is first consideration, then are you doing the work yourself?

I was hoping to keep the amp cost around $500-$600 for both. Is this reasonable?

I will be doing the work.

If you want to stay with a local guy I would look into Memphis, Cadence, or possibly Crunch. I personally was able to, and almost bought, get two memphis amps for that price and really liked the look of the amps. I know of people using the new Cadence and have heard Crunch amps have gotten better. If you look online the prices can be cheaper and the choices will open up, but I found it more confusing with so many brands to choose from.

Crunch, Hifonics, Autotek, MB Quart all owned by the same company

I believe they are all owned by Maxxsonics...crazy all the buyouts going on in the audio industry.

Can I add a few more question? I would like to keep the sub in the stock location (behind the drivers seat). Has anyone created a sealed enclosure in this area? How? Is this necessary?

Also, does anyone have experiece with the JL E1400? Is this sufficient for the MM104 sub?

That amp puts out 500 watts rms at 2 ohms. It will be fine.

Joe-regardless of how much power you put to your Polks you will probably have a hard time hearing them @ 80ft. A speaker upgrade sounds like a more viable option then a amp upgrade for your situation.

well that sucks ... considering changing the tower speakers isn't really an option.

Right now the towers speakers are only getting 45W's each ... a more powerful amp will at least get me something, right? What are suggestions to power those 4 speakers?

They will sound better with a bigger amp.

Yes a better amp will help alot if your only feeding them that much power. Will it be possible to hear them 80ft back ? Yes, but probably not very well unless the wind is blowing in the right direction . The Polks are great speakers but were designed for a enclosed car enviroment. Soft dome tweeters just cant project sound like a HLCD setup.

With component speakers I always try to get an amp with a slightly higher per channel rms then what the speakers are rated for. For just the tower an amp that puts out around 250-300rms x 2 would work well. If you bridge your current amp it would give you 150w rms X 3. I would bridge your current amp 1st and see what you think before purchasing a new one.

Anyone have an idea of how I can create a sealed enclosure with the sub staying in the current stock location?

Build a sealed enclosure to fit in the compartment that the sub is in now. Then put a nice sub in it. Then cut the basket off the stock sub and put the outer ring and grill back on for a vent. Did it on an X-30 the other day and it sounded killer. Either that or break out the table saw and the fiberglass..
