So I have 2 12" kicker cvr subs in the boat and they were wired to a JL 500/1 amp. My amp fried and I now have a lightning audio strike s4.1000.1d amp. Will this amp fry my subs? The specs on the amp say:

250 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms
500 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms
1000 watts x 1 @ 1 ohm

I'm not entirely sure how the subs are wired together but I took an ohms reading at the 2 wires that go to the amp and got just a little under 4 ohms.

So my assumption is that the subs are wired for a total of 4 ohms and my amp will only put out 250w @ 4-ohms, so I should be OK?

Are your CVR's dual 2 or dual 4 Ohm coils?

If you wire it like this you could drop it to a 2 ohm load and the amp would give you 250 watts per subwoofer which is a bit less than their rms rating of 400 watts. So it will be safe but you won't be hearing the full potential of the subs.

I'm not entirely sure how they are wired, but i did take an ohm reading at the 2 wires that go into the amp. Is this a valid way to check the ohm load? It was just under 4 ohms.....

A 2 Ohm load at the amps is the best configuration you are going to get with those subs. This configuration will be safe for both the subs and amp.

You need to disconnect the sub's wires from the amp.

Yes the wires are disconnected from the amp.

So since the amp specs say 500w x 1 @ 2 ohms, and I will be running 2 speakers, then its 250w per speaker? And if I were to wire the speakers at 4 ohms, then it would be 125w to each speaker?

Then it sounds like you have dual-4 ohm subs if you reading is correct. If so, then wire them parallel/parallel for a 1 Ohm load.

May be worth pulling one of the subs out and verify what the sticker on the magnet states.

well I pulled a sub out and they are wired like the diagram Brandon posted. They are the dual 2 ohm model. I was also wrong about the size.......they are actually 07cvr102 subs.

And I took an ohms reading for each coil with all the wires unhooked and each coil is 2 ohms, but when I wire them up like in the diagram I get a total of 4 ohms.

If all 4 coils are wire together in a correct configuration, you will have one of 3 ohm loads: .5, 2 or 4 ohm.

Found the problem, whoever wired these things the first time didnt use electrical tape and the wires were shorting out. Now when I wire up all 4 subs, I get a 2 ohm reading total.

So if I hook it up to the amp with a 2 ohm load, the amp will put out a total of 500w (250w to each sub) or 500w to each sub? The RMS on the subs is 400w each.

Sounds like you may have found the root cause of the blow amp as well.

Correct. A 2 ohm load will deliver 500W RMS equaling 250W to each woofer. Yes, the RMS of the CVR10 is 400 and the peak is 800.
