Hey Guys,

I am looking at coming back to the States (was there jan-march 2010) for a month around January 2012.

It's just me and a mate, we are going to hit Colorado for some snowboarding but are wondering what other stuff we should try and do while we are there. We aren't really into site-seeing more experiencing crazy stuff so just looking for some ideas/information on what we can do or cool places to go. We are pretty open minded about where to go.

We'd love to catch an NBA game, probably a college basketball game too. I also would love to catch a football game but I know with it being playoffs there is probably no chance I'll get to an NFL game. When does college football wrap up and what would be the chances of getting into a game or if not where is good to go to get into the whole spirit of it all. We went to a superbowl party at a Casino in Tahoe last time we were there but we'd love to go somewhere that is all out.

Are there any festivals, special events etc we can get along to? Basically we just want to have some crazy good times and do stuff that the average tourist probably wouldn't. Just experience a bit of the American lifestyle so to speak.

Any ideas etc would be greatly appreciated and I'm happy to return the favour for anyone travelling to Aus anytime soon.

Cheers

College football - BCS bowl games and National Championship game is basically the first week in January. Depending on what kind of ticket you want and how much you want to pay you can always get them at the game. Those are always fun and a great atmosphere.
Basketball games (college and pro) are pretty easy to get tickets to.

The biggest "party" in the USA takes place in New Orleans at Mardi Gras (Feb 18 thru 21st) and if you want to experience crazy stuff that's the place to do it but you better book that now because everything fills up fast.

Spring Break for all the Universities starts March-April so Vegas, Colorado will be fun times during then.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Guys,

I guess the college football is ruled out then as we will pretty much only be arriving then. Ah well I will just have to find a good pub or sports bar to watch the playoffs in.

We will definately spend a weekend in Vegas and probably Miami.

We've both got to be back at work 2nd week of feb at the latest so that cancels out Mardi Gras too unfortunately.

What's everyone's pick of resorts in Colorado? Are there any lesser known resorts with good terrain. I am not overly fussed on the park more just into freeriding and want to find some quiet resorts where I can get fresh tracks most of the day

I am no expert but the winter park MJ area has open terain leading up the pass. we see guys hitch hiking up and riding down all day. Free tree skiing but you had better work on your cardio.
Im sure there are other places in Co. Its just one I know of.

I'd also recommend Winter Park, my favorite place in Colorado. It's a ways from the other resorts, which poses a small problem if you are wanting to hit different locations. If you are wanting to hit many different resorts, I would recommend staying in the Dillon area. It's very close to Keystone/Breck and Copper and Vail are not super long drives.

I'm moving to Orlando in October... hit me up! I'll come party in Miami with you guys!

As far as Colorado resorts, the northern resorts may not have great snow at that time. We usually get hit in February-March. But Winter Park and Copper usually have decent snow by then. The southern resorts should be pretty epic... check out Wolf Creek.

The winter X-Games are being held January 26-29 in Aspen. That's always an amazing time... and a hell of a party!

Thanks. Will definately check out Winter park. When I went to Tahoe in 2010 we got there on the 16th Jan and had 8 ft in 4 days. Hopefully we get similar this time.

Nicole that post just made my day. We will definately be checking out winter x. Do you know what resort it's at? And we'll party in Miami for sure. I might even swing through Orlando, I have always wanted to go. I was a wakeboarder before I was a snowboarder but it's just easier to travel in our summer, your winter, because of our christmas break so I've never made it to Orlando to wakeboard.

They're held at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen. Start looking at booking a room or whatever you want to do quick... it's a busy place at that time.

This will be my first time living in Florida, so I am hoping for a lovely, warm winter and daily shredding. Behind a boat or cable... there should be options.
