Like anywhere on the lake it's going to depend on the time of year as to how close the the water you are going to be. I went last year early Sept. for a few days and it was great. Although it was a little hike to the water, we were still able to moor our boats in the lake over night. If you go early enough in the year the lake should be right up there. Another bonus is the water through there. It was glass all day long from the mouth of the river to about 2 miles past the campground towards the main body. The rest of the McCloud was blown out from about 10-11am until 5-6pm. The one draw back is that it is a solid 1/2hr drive off the freeway even though it's only about 10 miles. I would book asap it looks like it's filling up fast.

What Bryan says! That is Ellery creek in a nutshell

Ellery Creek is awesome, besides the lame windy drive down. Launch at Hirz Bay and then anchor your boat close to shore. Some of the best Shasta water you will experience because it is blocked by cliff/mountains on both sides. If Ellery Creek is not available, I would go to Hirz Bay or Antlers for camping. Like Bryan said you go early in the year May - July and you will be much closer to the water from your camp site.

Has anybody done any shoreline camping there? We're looking at trying to hit up Beehive the first weekend in June, but are concerned about the water level being to high. We have some sites at Ellery as a backup plan.

Trinity is going to be a little colder earlier in the summer just because its in the mountains. Never actually have been there but everyone says its awesome, lots of campsites.
