iphone/ipod cable issues

I recently had a IS 75 cable installed in my boat and was planning on using the usb connector to read music output. The problem is, it will read and play music from my ipod nano this way, but not from my iphone. Do I need a different cable or is there an adaptor? I'm assuming apple made some changes and the iphone doesn't have the same pin configuration that the ipods have.

The 3gs and presumably 4 dont play well with older cords. I have an alpine in my boat and it will play my 3gs but I get a weird error message. Also it wont charge from older cords.
