i have 96 maristar v-drive 275hp and presently have 1500lbs ballast plus people. it has 14X18 prop and is a little doggish out of hole when full weighted. i was wondering if i would see huge gains with 14X16 and what prop everyone recommends. acme 4 blade or oj. my present top end rpm is 4500.

Allan,
Find a local prop shop or somebody willing to let you try a couple different things and exchange until you find a good solution. Call the MC dealers in Tahoe or Denver and see what they recommend for high altitude? Your power situation is not much different than an unloaded boat at altitude.

Dropping 2" in pitch would make a positive difference. You may also have to re-jet the carb for high altitude.

I am an Acme dealer, let me know if you have difficulty in finding a prop in your area. I can have one shipped out the next business day to you.

Your engine will hit the high end of the rpms though.

I have an 03' x-10 that I put the 14x16 on and it made a huge difference. Don't worry about the red line limit. Full throttle I have 200-300rpms left.
