I boat in an area where the lakes can have some stumps for obstacles. I am wondering what sounders are being used and looking for feedback. My goal is get a unit that will show underwater obstacles i.e. stumps before I get to them. Note: there are spots on the lake where the depth is 20 feet and just below the surface are the hull and prop destroyers.

Opinions??

At 22 MPH you are traveling 32 feet per second. You would be asking a sonar to scan at least 5 seconds in front of you only a couple of feet under the surface and there just isn't anything outside a military module mounted under your hull that is going to read that. You are best to take the time to cruise and become very familiar with the lake.

a depth sounder will only show your depth directly below the boat and I recommend them to everyone.
But still need to idle through any area you plan on boarding in,
however, if you have stumps that you can hit in 20 feet of water...I would find a safer spot.
We have barefooted in some lakes that had submerged trees...just under the surface...water level went down and we had been footing directly over a bunch of drowned trees. it was an eye opener.
