I am looking for real world pictures of Mastercraft's LED underwater lighting..

All I see pictures of them on boats sitting on trailers which is totally pointless..

I want to see how they actually light up the water!

It's a nice option for $500ish but only if it works!

If it is anything like the products on this website than I am totally for it 100%

Yes saw that post, but like I stated....

Not one if a Mastercraft with their new 08 LED lighting..

I know I can buy some LED and install myself.. was asking about the OEM option.

This is 1 of the LED units, white in color, not the blue that is used from the factory.
It is the same make and model just different color.

Hey Chase,
Why the Abyss lights over the stock Malibus? Have you seen the new ones in 2008?

bill - are those mounted to your swimplatform or thru hull?

i would love to get some lights for my new Malibu, but it would never be worth cutting holes in the transom for in my opinion....

if you've found something that can be mounted on the transom or swimplatform that would be awesome!

let me know...

So no one actually has a real life pic of the Mastercraft OEM option?

I am aware I can do myself... though may need a few beers to get courage to drill a hole through the transom on a new boat!

tj those LED's on the malibu are on the swimplatform not in the transom. i pick my boat up tomorrow night so ill post some pics on here. also u can contact Jim at Team Neptunes at 209 466 8863 he can answer all of ur ?'s www.teamneptunes.com

Yea, I believe that pic is of the LEDs mounted to the swimstep, TJ. It is a pic they have on their website.

I purchased the 2008 Malibu LEDs from my dealer a couple weeks ago. These are installed just below the waterline in the transom with the wiring inside the boat. Our lake is still frozen solid so I haven't had a chance to get the boat out & get the LEDs mounted. 6 little holes, 4 screws & some silicon, wire them up & they will be done. Haven't decided if I will wire them to the existing interior LEDs or the stern light.

Maybe I'll try & get it done this weekend.

Mike that looks sick man. i can't wait till you post some pics of what it looks like in the water at night.

so no holes below the waterline in your setup? that's baddd...

also- i wonder if i could run these along the bottom of my dock? i feel okay drilling all the holes in the world into it....although drilling underwater might be a challenge. lol

tj,

No problems drilling underwater, been there with my dock. It's called a brace and bit, muscle power, the old fashion way.

Mike,
Those are above water, no doubt they will look good.

Are you guys drilling through-hulls to get the power wire back in? If not, what is your method?

using the stud from the swim deck mount
no hole in the boat

do you have a pic of the wires using the swim deck stud... i've been wondering the best route to run the wirse... i was thinking in w/ rub rail through bilge or in throw blower hole

Nick - i believe what they mean is they just hook the power, positive and neg to the metal brackets of the swimplatform, one on each side and complete the circuit using the LEDs.

Craig Glass, do you have some more photos of the project? I was looking more along the lines of how you ran the power to the platform leds? Looks like it should work really simple?

boat in storage right now no pics
I placed a washer between the bolt and swim platform
and soldered the leds to them
did same inside the boat before the nut

p.s. remember to place a waterproof disconnect on the swim deck side if you want to remove the swim deck :-)

Maybe a stupid question...Do these have their own power source built in?

I don't understand how you can hook them up to the metal brackets and complete the ciruit.

Platform + and - to the exterior platform brackets, one on each end. Interior wires running from your 12vdc circuit to the interior/transom platform bolts, + and - to same side as the exterior. When the platform is placed into the mount brackets it completes the circuit. This works because of two factors, fresh water is an electrical conductor and they are low voltage. A .5 amp fuse on the inside + wire protects the circuit.

correct
just remember to encase the soldered joint in epoxy to water proof it

For the people that don't understand the bolts that go through the hull to mount the swim platform.

Now I just have to see if I can connect mine this way. I wanted to add the LED's to the swim platform last year but this year it is happening for sure.

Dave just take your time making a nice waterproof string of leds
I had to epoxy the backs and fronts of the leds
just incase ( they are waterproof)
and pay attention to where the wiring connents expoxy expoxy expoxy Upload

i think the hardest part is going to be attaching the LEDs to the actual platform. if you have a teak platform this will probably just be some small galvanized deck screws. it looks like thats what you used, right craig?

Razzman, thanks for explaining it more i guess at first glance it might not be really clear what i meant. however, i don't think the fact that fresh water is an electrical conductor has anything to do with this one, does it? =)
Old     (razzman)      Join Date: Dec 2006       02-29-2008, 11:49 AM Reply
Yeah it does actually help because unlike a normal electrical connector where you have a 100% positive connection, using the platform brackets as the connector is not 100% positive so the water surrounding the joint actually helps a bit.

Here's what i'm doing mine with shortly. http://www.oznium.com/square-channel These come in rolls and you just tell them how many lights you want (it's roughly two per foot) and they cut to length. That way you don't have to worry about soldering all the darn things together!
Old     (tj_in_kc)      Join Date: Jan 2008       02-29-2008, 12:12 PM Reply
Nice find Razzman. Those are pretty low prices too...how many are you going to order?

i also like the lights (Mikeski) is using above, would be interesting to compare the two in the water and see which one puts out more light.

Tell me this craig, did you run the wires up to your accessory lights or NAV lights switch on the dash? i was thinking how clean that would be. might be simpler to just have a simple switch at the battery or in the sun lounge compartment though...

anyone have thoughts on that part of it?
Old     (tj_in_kc)      Join Date: Jan 2008       02-29-2008, 12:17 PM Reply
btw, Razzman i still think your conductivity argument is weak like the ukraine...haha freshwater is like 1500 µS/cm max, hardly a strong enough conductor to make a difference...now if we were talking saltwater...well thats a hell of a lot more conductive.
Old     (razzman)      Join Date: Dec 2006       02-29-2008, 12:22 PM Reply
I think i'm going with 16 lights but have to pull the platform to be sure.

I'm no engineer or waterologist ... i just know it works

all the leds run through the dash switch and fuse
safety first

tj yes used screws and expoxy but witha teak deck I would make a channel with a rotor to place the wires and pods in then expoxy expoxy

used the screws to hold while the expoxy set up
then got lazy and decided to leave them in

they also come in a string

Not sure what your saying here Craig but i assume your saying the superbright ones are pre-wired in one strand. So are the ones i posted a link to.

0The problem with the superbright ones is that the wires exit each module at the top making it much harder to design and implement a clean install. The Oznium units have the wires exiting the base allowing you to recess them and make a real clean install.

are you saying mine install is not clean????

Never entered my mind I'm doing mine similar to "G"'s where i'm recessing them into pieces of teak and wires at the top won't work in that application.
