its supposed to dip down to the high 20s. should i worry about water freezing in the engine block? should i throw a light bulb in there?

just throw a bulb in there for peace of mind. generally takes a number of days though..

I use the "Puddle Rule" since I don't winterize my boat in California. When puddles of water start to freeze you need to be concerned. I would imagine the rule applies to springtime in NY.

I think our summer has already passed in upstate NY. We had a week + of highs in the 60s! 20s tonight again? The other morning I saw cooling vapor coming off the lake when the temp was 30ish and the water was still only low 50s. I really need to purchase a decent dry-suit

I don't think you'll have a problem. The engine has a lot of mass that has to expend that heat energy.

But, a light bulb is cheap insurance against a $5k engine rebuild.
