On my vacation last week I was lucky enough to have my truck totaled, boat trailer totaled, and my boat damaged. I'm now in the processes of getting quotes for everything to the insurance company and finding replacements. I had a 2005 Suburban 2500 with the 6.0L. I was pretty happy with it and if I were to change anything it would be to get one with the 8.1L. I have considered an Excursion with the 7.3 or 6.0, but have not found any in my price range yet. I would also consider a crew cab truck. I have seen a couple high milages H2s also, but not sure how well they tow. This will NOT be a daily driver. I will put maybe 5,000 miles on it a year with more trips being less than 30 miles to the lake. It will also get a little use on the farm. This is why my budget is so low. I cannot see a reason to pay any more for something that will get driven so little and will spend most of it's life hooked to the boat in the garage.

Any other vehicles I should be looking for? I think a 1/2 ton truck would do the job for the boat, but I also have a 30' camper that weighs around 8000 pounds that I would like to be able to pull with this truck too.

My friend has an 05 crew cab silverado that has the 6.0 gasser with 4:10 gears. It pulls like a dream and is in that price range. Or find a ford f250 super duty with the 5.4. My parents have one and it hauls everything they throw at it

Hmm I have an idea for you, how about this 2004 4x4 2500hd that I am looking at selling... I never drive it anymore since I have a company vehicle. PM if you want some details! You could save 5K going this route. That's a lot of boat gas $$$$$!

Jon, check out vci.net's classifieds. There's a lot of trucks on there local to me. Seay Motors in Mayfield and Paducah have a lot of decently priced diesel trucks that may be close to that price range.

For 8,000#, I wouldn't go less than a diesel. I've had the 6.0's with 4:10's, 1/2 ton's of all makes, and NONE of them pulled like a dream. More like a zero torque nightmare.

'03-'06 Escalade EXT can be had in that price range. AWD + 6.0 motor. Or you could get a similar vintage regular Escalade if you want a SUV.

For $15k I'd be looking for a diesel... Late 90s 5.9 cummins with a stick.

Until i read the last sentence i was going to say a gasser. With an 8k camper id agree with MASE. Find a clean descent milage 7.3, tune it, delete it and it will run for years.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have access to a 3500 diesel crew if I have to pull the camper long distances, and I would realistically only pull it once or twice a year for less than 90 miles. I do have an family of four so a crew cab or SUV is a requirement.

I have found several 6.0l and 8.1l trucks and SUVs in my price range, still looking for a diesel too though.

Just thought I'd chime in.
I got my tow rig on the cheap, got it for towing and hauling stuff, and under $1000.
I got a 76 F150 supercab (seats 6) 2wd trailer special with a 390ci engine and a C6 tranny. It has the overload springs in the back and bigger brakes up front. It tows anything like a champ and you don't even feel like it's there.
It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it does the job and is cheap, reliable, and cheap and easy to fix should something go wrong.
It tows our 73 marlin skiboat and my buddy's 92 sunsport without issue. Do not discount the older vehicles, they can definitely pull their weight and whatever is behind them. Anything past a 78 should have a full crew cab option as well and into the 80s you get fuel injected reliability.
