Shoulder injuries hurt like hell. I've done that one and broken my ankle. You will hear mostly about knees, ankles and concussions in this fine sport. Good luck, rehab it hard and get back! Don't let scar tissue build up.

how long where you out for stephan? ever done it again since the first one? how do you prevent scar tissue from bulding up?

I didn't completely dislocate it, just a separation. I was only out a week, although I had no business riding but what can I say, I'm dumb. Dislocation is more severe and at first your shoulder will try and tighten itself back up and then build scar tissue to keep it there, the problem is it will get too tight and the chance of doing it again is high. You prevent scar tissue by working it, start small finger walking up the wall and then doing a full range of motion exercises. I played racquetball and that was huge as you move all over and force your arm to be explosive. After you've popped it once, its a good idea to work hard to make your shoulders strong, you want muscle not scar tissue. My dad has had 6 shoulder surgeries and now he hits the gym hard and kayaks regularly to stay strong.

from oldest injury to newest:

broke my face on my knee 8-23-97 learning crows. 5 broken teeth, pulled TMJ, major concussion. on the water 2 weeks later (got the trick that first week back).

Pulled back mucsle. out 3-4 weeks. this one is re-occuring, and a son-of-a-mean-person. if i restrain it it could be 2-4 weeks of recovery.

broken left wrist. landed on shore while riding at night. real smart decision. Once i got the cast (ALWAYS get a fiberglass/gortex cast) i was riding normal again. it was awesome when i grabed the board with the cast on...THUD! you know you got the grab.

right ankle sprain. 2-3 weeks. big front flip with wierd landing. it still hurts, but when riding the adrenelene (sp?) kicks in and NO PAIN!

Left hip. not sure whats wrong with it, excatly, but when I hurt it, it felt like the femur poped outa the sockect for a split second. again, another front flip. out 1-2 weeks.

i probably got more...but i forget them all.

Wakeviolator, you're so tuff...
You put my cracked foot bone that put me out for a week last season and my minor back strain (current)to shame.
Can't get better if you don't fall though right??

i've been pretty lucky so far... a few minor tweaks to the knee, including one dislocated knee-cap (not sure of medical term for that, it was pushed to the outside...) and a couple broken noses courtesy of my own knee and a meaty double-up...luckily i still have all my teeth. toss in a few minor concussions for good measure.

Broke a rib (broke, not cracked) 5 weeks ago on an under rotated HSBR. I was riding again 12 days later.

I want to stay far away from any complicated joint injuries. ie. Knees, Ankles, Shoulders.... and the only way is to add strength training. That being said....
I have:
-broken 2 ankles
-ruptured a disk (surgery- discectomy & laminectomy)
- had 3 or 4 ruptured eardrums
-at least 5 or 6 concussions
-possible broken finger now (minor)
-many strains
just in around the 5 years I have been riding.

Broke my ankle over a year ago on my first and only (so far) backroll attempt... I think I was out for about 3 months, but was able to surf WAY sooner (doc said it's like using a balance board )

Getting old sucks, but I'd rather bust it having fun than sit home and grow old gracefully....

As a side note, I broke my wrist in two places at Pismo... My wrist is still weak, but I found my grip and in-line strength is good enough to ride...

* I've been out for a few weeks now with a fractured ankle.

* Year before last - knocked out with a Concussion, 4 days on the neurology floor, 2 weeks of memory still gone. I lost the memory from the week prior and the week after the fall. That one kinda still haunts me.

* Busted ear drum and had to have surgery to repair it. But that was about 7 years ago.

All of my injuries accured doing tricks that I was landing 99% of the time.

Josh I was cool with everything everyone just said with the exception of your last comment about "incurred doing tricks that I was landing 99% of the time" Dude! Us old people don't need to hear that shiiaatt!

No kidding, My Bad... It gets in my own head bad enough as it is, nobody else needs to battle that as well.

Maybe the moral of the story is that you can go out and try some crazy stuff cause you won't get hurt. Just don't do the same tricks over again. :-)

Knee strain earlier this year, was out for a couple of weeks.

??? Took a nasty crash at sunset last Friday. Can't get in to see the doc until Wednesday morning. I don't really expect good news though. A knee just isn't supposed to pop like it did that day!!!!

I fell last week unloading the boat and got 3 stitches in between my middle finger and ring finger. Should be back riding this next weekend depending on how it looks when I take the stitches out.

separated shoulder put me out for all of winter and it still feels loose and this was 2 years ago.

broken femur, did that snowboarding, puts me out 12 weeks for the bone to heal and rehab has been pretty successful i just cant run. there is a titaium rod in my leg so it should be fine soon enough.

I just disclocated my shoulder for the fourth time on Sunday night. The first one is the worst and takes the longest to recover from. My previous 3 have been from kiteboarding, and last time I was back on the water in a month, hoping even less than that this time around. Learn how to fall safely and protect your shoulder and think elbows in all the time. Listen to your body, rehab the hell out of it, and take care of yourself!

Broke my Tibia and Fibula April 19th doing a backroll that came up short. A titanium plate and 12 screws later... I'm 8 weeks in and doc thinks 4-6 more before I can walk unassisted, then PT. Letter is in this months (July) Wakeboarding Magazine. This season is pretty much hosed. Hope to get some late season Wake Surfing in, something low impact. :-)

Dude, that is one bad break! Sorry to hear about it. That looks just like mine tib/fib break I had playing soccer when I was 14. It is stronger than ever now though and I'm sure it will be the same story for you. Good luck!

My injuries include broken ribs, torn meniscus and MCL, dislocated shoulder, busted ear drums, and multiple ankle sprains and headaches.

I dislocated my shoulder snowboarding two years ago and it was incredibly painful.

Now it pops out with regularity. But, its not as big of a deal - might end that ride, but I'll go again in 30 minutes.

My crew tends to go for stitches more than anything. Usually from hitting their face or the back of their head on the edge of the board.

Worst we've ever had was when my brother got his arm stuck in the handle and partially tore his bicep. I've never seen something swell up like that...

So John.... why a fusion? can't they replace the disk with an artificial one? I will need a new disk ay some point and trying to weight my options.
