Nice attempt.

Big Worm 7 aka: Big Johnson, after Brannan Johnson who was landing them back in 1998.

I don't believe a Big Johnson was a worm 7. I thought it was a switch worm 5.. Anyone?

Matt has it right, T/S Whirly bird 720 = Big Johnson

Did anyone read the horrible trick name article in the newest alliance wakeboard? I think this fits into that area of horrible names that make wakeboarding sound lame.
Old     (bill)      Join Date: Feb 2001       02-28-2007, 4:00 PM Reply
IM pretty sure the ts whirly 540 is a Big Worm and the 3 version is called a Diesel..

so maybe Big Johnson is the 720, which ive never seen or heard it ever being done..
Old     (wakedad33)      Join Date: Oct 2005       02-28-2007, 4:22 PM Reply
Bill watch the clip at the beginning of this thread, like Matt said above, one of the top Pro riders in the late 90's Brandon Johnson was doing the T/S whirly 720 aka Big Johnson back in the day. Kyle Alberts is very close if he dosen't have it by now. Sick trick.

So then whats the Big Lebowski?
Old     (electricsnow)      Join Date: May 2002       02-28-2007, 6:29 PM Reply
every boardsport has lame names. It's lame to act like wakeboarding is some how even more retarded because of trick names...I guess if it "sounds" cool it automatically "looks" cool...or something...

(that's just my commentary)
Old     (tentcitygoon)      Join Date: Mar 2006       02-28-2007, 7:02 PM Reply
I would rather say "I landed an ole 10 than a big johnson"

Nonetheless, Kyle Alberts looks to be killing it!
Old     (lostkgb78)      Join Date: Oct 2005       02-28-2007, 8:08 PM Reply
Some names stick... others don't
If your the first to land it, you name it.
Names that didn't stick-
Malt-o-meal aka roll-to-revert (Perez?)
Patriot Missle (To bring down the scud) aka TS roll to blind (Cory Pickos)

The trick above is a Big Johnson aka Ole 10 or TS whirly 7
No matter what you call it... It was sick...
Old     (dmcguirt23)      Join Date: Aug 2004       02-28-2007, 10:54 PM Reply
that trick is amazing!

Anyone know what Brannon Johnson has been up to these days? does he still wakeboard?
Old     (rorowake)      Join Date: Oct 2003       03-01-2007, 8:55 AM Reply
Kyle is doing that trick (worm 7) switch. So what is a switch big johnson called??? :-)

A Switch Big Johnson...

This is like the SAT's. If a Slim Chance is to a H/S Frontflip 3 as a Fat Chance is to a Switch H/S Frontflip 3 OR a Crow Mobe is to a Scarecrow 3 as a Skeezer is to a Switch Scarecrow 3

THEN a Big Johnson is to a T/S Ole 10 as a ______ Johnson is to a Switch T/S Ole 10?

Anyone? Anyone? Anyone? Who said wakeboarding names are horrible or inconsistent or not logical. If Dewey was a wakeboarder, no one would be able to find a library book.

All right... here's where I might get a little controversial but I truly mean no offence to anyone.
For you historians this will bring back some nostalgia...
Back when tricks were assigned a point value and boards weren't symmetrical, switch tricks were scored way higher for a reason-It was hard as hell to do anything switch on a directional board.
As the twin tip came into play, riding switch became irrelevant. A lot of people found some trick easier to do switch. (Especially Parks)

Now here's where I might offend people, but again thatís not my intention.

A lot of people have tried to take credit for doing a trick switch that has already been done normal. (Not going to name any tricks) and other tricks were invented switch and renamed when done regular. I've always felt that if you invent a trick, it's yours and no one should be able to rename it because they did the same trick.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone. My 2 cents...

Hi Ryan! Tell please - why you named KGB is KGB? Just interested... Thanks
Old     (brhanley)      Join Date: Jun 2001       03-02-2007, 8:20 AM Reply
I agree with Ryan on the switch concept, but maybe he can fill us in on the trick name concept.

To me, the whole "trick naming" concept itself (e.g., Big Johnson) begs the question (always wanted to use that phrase appropriately in a sentence) whether simply adding another rotation to an existing trick is a whole new trick deserving of a new name in the first place. Maybe Ryan can give us some insight.

Example, if the Big Johnson is simply an extra rotation on the Big Worm (not sure it is), why isn't it the Big Worm ___ (insert extra rotation here)? For that matter, why isn't the Big Worm a crow ole ___ (insert rotation here)? Just seems weird to me that some tricks get names (KGB, Hasselhoff, Tantrum to Blind v. Moby Dick, Tootsie Roll v. Dum Dum) and others (KGB 5 (should be called a Mary Jane or Chronic), crow mobe 5, etc.) simply add rotations. Does the first guy to land it have naming rights and, if he declines, it just adds a rotation? Inquiring minds want to know...(as you can tell, I have far too much time on my hands to think about this stuff...)

FAR FAR too much time

KGB = (Russian CIA) of course...?

BCH- my point exactly- some names stick, some don't...some get names, some don't.
Old     (electricsnow)      Join Date: May 2002       03-02-2007, 11:33 AM Reply
BCH, I think it comes down to personal opinion. I thought I read a quote from randy harris somewhere, and he thought that adding a grab made a trick completely different. I'd agree with're messing around with different techniques, added style and whatever else. However, I don't know that he was implying that a new name should be added...

with that said (and to support something ryan said in his last post), todd richards "invented" the wet cat, which is essentially a mctwist 9. It can pretty much go by either name, but he chose to adopt a new name (one that is rather "jokey") instead of just utilizing the mctwist thing with a different number.

Anyway, I agree with the two of you. If there's one thing that disappoints me, it'd be the double naming with a few tricks out there, specifically to the switch and regular versions...(like x mobe vs pete rose, blah blah blah).

Judging by your amazing response time, the same could be said of you KBC! At least on Thursdays-Saturdays...

this is kind of random
but how come no one does the hasselhoff anymore
i don't think i have even seen one done
seems like it would be a pretty sick trick to see

It IS a sick trick! I miss toeside fronts as well...

ES- I wasn't going to name the x-mobe but it's the poster child for this whole discussion...
I agree with you about Randall, I swear that kid could make a crow mobe (as well as other tricks) look so so mean. He definitely makes his tricks his own...

wait whats a hasselhoff i forgot?
Old     (electricsnow)      Join Date: May 2002       03-03-2007, 10:45 AM Reply
a hasselhoff is a front "to blind" (backside 180).

You know, I was thinking about flip tricks in skating and they don't necessarily follow that ideal logic either. Some are named as they are--360 flip, frontside flip, whatever. But hardflip? Inward heelflip, and then a heelflip with a frontside shuvit is a varial heel? That leads me to believe even more that it's a personal thing, more than anything.

Yeah, the x mobe is a weird thing...I always speculated on it, but someone actually mentioned on here that the name came from some sort of mastercraft contest. Either way...yeah. What do you do?
Old     (brhanley)      Join Date: Jun 2001       03-03-2007, 7:08 PM Reply
I thought the Hasselhoff was a switch front flip to blind (b/s 180)! At least the way Horrel threw it...a switch Hasselhoff = doing it your normal riding direction? Another poster child trick (and a genius trick name by the way).
Old     (wakedad33)      Join Date: Oct 2005       03-03-2007, 7:38 PM Reply
BCH is correct, it is a switch front to blind. don't see it very much anymore.

yeah, i couldn't remember if it was switch or not. oops!

heelside or toeside for the hasselhoff?

not often you get to call out electricsnow, even if very minor...from my limited lurking the most informed person on this site...i'm gonna savor that flavor!

wait, can I say that on here?

mr. BCH, i should add that you're one of my favorite people on here. You are some how a part of the history I took in. Let me tell you, it was a riot to see you on here. And it's cool to see that people from "way back" are still involved in wakeboarding...

Kevin, it's "heelside." A "toeside" front to blind is a fruit loop.

wow. so many names. i think it would be alot easier if there werent trick names and it was just called what it is. for someone like me, it would make it alot easier to understand

i thought gregg necrasson named the KGB.

it took him a while to learn it so he named it Kicks Gregg's Butt=KGB

OH, and way ago to Kyle. Now that he's in orlando full time, I'd say he'll get this trick.
