I have a 1989 I/O and am looking to upgrade to a bigger wake. I only have about 12 grand to spend on this new boat so that puts me somewhere in the 1989 to 1994 year range. I am wondering if an inboard boat in this year range will provide a larger wake than what I am dealing with now. Any comments or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

One thing I will say is to make sure and research the hull that you are looking at. Just because it is an inboard does not mean that it will throw a huge wake, but you have a greater chance :-).

cc 2001. best starter towboat on the planet. '89 is the last production year and the most 'plush' if you can find one. should be sub $10k.

and don't waste your time/$/energy on an I/O.

1990 - 1992 Sport Nautique - open bow and takes weight. 2001's are definitely all over the place too and you can pick one up much cheaper but there is zero room in those.

1996-1997 Ski Challenger or Wake Challenger! The are awesome, EFI V-8, V-Drive, Heater, Shower, 21 feet long and throw a great wake. Mine wake is very similar to a older Xstar. I put perfect pass, a tower, speakers, 2500# ballast system and it rocks! Check it out, and do the same. http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=3138

I see this a lot and never say anything but it's actually inboard/out drive.

I think both terms are correct. I say Inboard/outboard. That Nautique Excel looks sweet... do those surf well?

I really appreciate all of the input. I was also wondering if you can put a perfect pass system, or some sort of speed control device, on any older inboard?

I'm biased for sure, but I love my 85 Supra Sunsport. If you weight it properly, this throws a great wake and it has the open bow for plenty of peeps. I only have about 700lbs of fat sacs and it is a really nice clean wake. I borrowed 600lbs of sand for the last run of last year (so 1300lbs total) and it was perfect. Great wakeboard wake, great surf wake. And that's only 1300 lbs. Add a couple side sacs and bump up to 2k ballast....monster wake. The only reason I upgraded (1 month ago) was to get a v-drive. Perfect budget boat though. I'm selling mine this spring if you're interested. New engine, new interior upholstery, tower speakers, etc. In your budget too.

I have seen Sport Nautique's, Supra Sunsport's, MC ProStar 205's and Malibu Sunsetter's all in that price range. They are all open bow which is nice. I have seen a Super Sport and a Sunsetter VLX (both V-drives) go for 9.5K and 13K respectively. You just have to keep your eyes open. CC 2001's can range in price but they make great wakes. I would have one of those if interior space wasn't an issue at times. All of these boats will produce a nice wake. The wake shape and firmness of these boats make them nice platforms for wakeboarding. As you add weight, the wakes get bigger but maintain their shape and firmness.

I've been really happy with my Mastercraft Tristar. Throws an awesome wake with 1500 lbs and 8 people. They will fall into your price range for sure...there is a picture of mine in my profile.

I am wondering how if, like an I/O, you can run an inboard out of the water? Like in your driveway.

You certainly can. Some folks use a "fake-a-lake" that you put under the boat, right at the water intake. Personally, I just pull the 1" hose off the fresh water scoop and insert my water hose, then tighten up the clamp.

You shouldn't rev it too high (2000 rpms or so) or you'll starve the engine of cool water, but you can definitely fire it up.

I made my own "fake-a-lake" type setup but Nacho's way of doing it is probably a lot more safe and more efficient imo
