Good boat? Good deal? 1998 Ski Nautique

This is right down the street from me and I am trying to convince my dad to buy a boat.

Is this a good boat for a good price? It looks decent to me.

How is the wake?

Great boat! I learned to ride behind that same model. That would be a good price but there isnt a trailer. Throws a nice wake. And thats not a ski, its a sport, it will throw a much better wake than a ski of that year.

Plus the Gt-40 engine is bulletproof. 600 hrs is just broken in.

Uh...thats what the wake will look like with 1500-2000 pounds of ballast. Thats quite a deal, I would be a little cautious. Crawl under the boat and check for dings, scratches, and shoddy gelcoat repair. Even in this economy that seems a little low, or the seller is extremely motivated.

It's a good deal, but consider that there is no trailer. That will partially explain the lower price. Having no trailer will eliminate some buyers because they don't want to mess with logistics. Now, you can find a used trailer and be in good shape.

It is worth what they are asking. There is no trailer, board racks, bimini, PP, and the list goes on. Nice boat, but missing some accessories and necessities.

Randall, I think stock on that boat is like 500 lbs, getting another 1000lbs (we run 1500lbs in our boat) in there will not be hard.

I know you're in Lakeland... check it out, it is in awesome shape, I remember looking at it while I was in Winter Haven.... take you dad and check it out.

I would bet you can get an top of the line trailer for like $2500

and ~$14000 for that boat is still a good score..

Nick its not quite the same hull but its very close. The sport doesnt quite as deep in the water as the super sport. (Look at the two together and the sport has less draft in the back.) From my understanding its a stretched out open bow version of the 2001. A little wider and 2 feet longer. With enough weight though you can get it similar to Nicks... well maybe. Nick has a v drive so lets say the engine is 800 plus at least another 800 in sacks just in the back. That means you are gonna need at least 1600 pounds in the rear and theres no way that will fit. With the direct drive all the motor weight is in the middle. Thus the wake will be more mellow. To start id throw between 400 and 700 in the back over stock and two 440s on the sides of the motor and 300 up front and see what that does. Thats how i weight my 2001 and it looks just like nicks pic.

One more thing, I ride currently behind my buddy's tige RZ2 with 1650lbs of ballast, do you think I could make the wake as good as that with a decent amount of weight? (I know the wake will be different but will it be as good)

I am not familiar with the tige, but you can get a pretty good wake from the sport, especially if you don't mind sacs not being hidden. I believe a 350 lb tube sac fits just right on top of the factory ballast in the trunk. Put a rear seat sac in the ski locker(it will probably only fill to about 450 lbs). The wake will be respectable at approx 1250 lbs. Add 2 vdrive sacs or 750s to the sides of the motor or 1 in the bow an the other behind the motor and you'll have a very good wake.

weight the boat correctly and you could probably get a better wake than the rz2. that however is my opinion. It all depends on what you like. There is a reason all of the older nautiques (2001, sport, super sport, 210) have such a rich history in the sport. Lots of firsts for the sport occurred behind these boats back in the day

Do you think the 98 sport would (could) do well with this ballast setup....replace the back seat with the 1600lb fly high seat, then put a 750 down the walkway at the front, plus the 500lbs stock.

I would say you need 1000 in the back, 500 in the front

I believe the back seat itself is the gas tank (under the cushions), at least it is for 2000 models. A 750 is too wide for the walkway. I almost agree with what Nick says. I run 2 rear gravity games sacks in the trunk which gets me close to 1000 lbs and 120 lbs in lead in crevases next to the gas tank (no factory ballast). If you add a tube sac or similar in front of the seat, you would be close to 1500 lbs. Depending on passengers, you'll need more than 500 lbs to keep the nose down, more like 800 lbs. You will need to reprop as well.

I may not know for sure, but the ski locker on the boat is HUGE.... we can fit like 800lbs in our ski-locker, if it is anything close to that you could get away with

Middle - 800 lbs (fly high fat seat bottom fits like a glove)
front - ~800 lbs in the "U" shaped bow bag fly high makes....

Bow -U shape will work but will add a lot less weight than the triangle one (which fits great under the nautique bow) ... it won't fill up 100% but way more than the U shape would
