I'm shopping for ballast and I'm planning on getting 1260 lbs worth of ballast. probably won't fill it all of the way and I think that my boat has a 1500 lbs max or something, anyways, the point is i was wondering how much ballast you put in your boat so I can get an idea of whats safe and stuff.

cool, so if i use about half the weight as u guys i should be fine :-) (my boat is about half as powerful) i'm kind of worried about the transmission though, it's a little weak as it is, and special care tips perchance?

Rebecca, is that a 17.5 Bayliner or a 20.5 one? These guys that are putting in a half dozen ballast bags, lead weight, sand, sealing wax, and chewing gum are probably all 21.5 or bigger boats. If your in a smaller boat 1500 lbs might be too much. How much power, these boats are all in the +300 hp range, you outboard might be a 125 hp Force, you might also want to look at 4 or 5 blade props.

What’s wrong with your transom, is your boat relatively old? My first boat was a 16 foot, 20 year old, 115 HP outboard. The transom was week so I added metal plate to stiffen the transom.

I run two 600 pound sacks and about three hundred in lead in the bow for a total of 1500 in my 1990 Bluewater DD.

I just picked up another 300 in lead to add though.

Launch SS
600 ski locker
500 center
400 rear
usually 3-5 people
Total low 2000's, about all the engine seems comfortable with. I like to change the oil every 30-40 hours as it usually gets pretty black by then, not Indmar's recommended 50 hours.

i have a 20 ft. bayliner, but it's not made to carry so much weight like a wakeboard boat is, and i'm worried about the transmission because just naturally putting more weight on the boat is going to add stress, i'm not so worried about that i guess, but it's something to think about :-)

I have a 21ft center console with a 200hp and i run 2 440 lb sacks on the sides. The boat takes a while to plane out with this and like 5 people.

with the engine trimed right the boat makes a really good wake for an outboard, the problem is keeping the boat at a sterqady speed more than the actual wake.

Rebecca,

My old boat had a 1100lb rating on the cap. plate. I was running about 1200+ people so I was doubling the rating at times. Handling was sketchy at times, it rode low and we would take wakes over the front and back too often for comfort so I sold the boat and bought a bigger V-drive. The weight most of the guys are stating are for v-drive inboard boats with tall sides.

I would start with a 400lb sack in the front and one in the back. Add the weight slowly, when handling starts getting weird and you start taking waves over the back you have gone too far. If the wake washes you either need to speed up or drop weight. You might also need to re-prop the motor to move the additional weight.

Rebecca,

I haven't seen your wake but in general if I had to choose between ballast and tower I'd choose tower. Of course, not really an even trade since a tower is typically a bit more money than a couple of fat sacks, but still if you don't have a tower or sky pole, I'd solve that problem before worrying about loading down the boat with a lot of weight.

Isn't "start with what the capacity sticker says" the standard answer? Does it apply to IOs? We're still happy running that in ours (sticker says 14-something and we run 16 to 17 plus a couple people.)

I already do own two fat sacs, but unfortunately haven't had the oppurtunity to use them yet (stupid me forgot the pump) they total 560lbs i think, so I think i'd just put one in the front and one in the back and the people i would be with would naturally sit in the back, so it would make a good 60-40 ratio I think (like "The Book" suggests) but how much difference does a tower make anyways? I figure with a year of savings I could afford one, but that's an awefully long time of course. (Well, perhaps I could have one at the END of the summer, but that wouldn't do me much good then.)
