Anyone have a good method of determining if a new rider is naturally regular foot or goofy?

have them run across a slippery floor like linoleum(?) or wood, and go into a surfing motion. note which foot they put forward.

I usually have them out on the boat without my skateboard

When they are not looking, give that person a push from behind. what ever foot they use to stop then from continuing the momentum, thats the foot that will be in front on the board. it works every time

Robert uses the most common/effective method

I've tried Robert's method before. Didn't work for my daughter, she put her left foot forward but rides goofy.

push them in the center of their back too.. if you push to their right shoulder, they will step right and vice versa for the left.

What about kicking a ball? doesn't that put your dominant foot forward?

I always ask someone to pretend like they're surfing. They always reply... "I don't know how to surf". Then I say... "That's why it's called pretending". Once you convince them that they *can* pretend to surf, it will usually give the right leg forward.

There's no way to tell for sure. I skate and snowboard regular and wakeboard goofy. If whoever youre teaching doesn't really prefer, get them doing both right from the beginning. I taught a friend last season and he couldn't decide which way so he kept trying both. He finally picked goofy, but hes just as good either way.

Doesn't matter, they should learn to ride switch anyways

I have people walk from the front of the boat to the back and have them step up the seat and onto the back. People usually step with their front foot first.
