I currently have the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor and was wondering if any one has added a TC-20E II (2x) AF-S, AF-I Teleconverter to it. I am shooting soccer games and would like a little more distance. Is there any downside to adding a teleconverter? Is the quality as good as the straight lens? Is there another brand that is less expensive that will work as well?

Thanks for any information.

Kevin

i would definately stick with nikon teleconverters. the downside is that teleconverters may add some distortion. the 2x has a little more distortion than the 1.6 but mainly depends on how much extra reach you need

Another thing with using teleconverters is that they make the viewfinder dimmer. The lens needs to be fast or you need it to be fairly bright in order to see anything. f/2.8 should be ok, I used one on an older f/4-5.6 or something like that and indoors I couldn't see a thing.

don't forget too to compensate by a stop to two stops, like brad said the only downside is it makes the lens a little slower because of it.

With 2X TC's you lose 2 stops, so your f2.8 becomes an f5.6, your AF will probably be slower and unless Nikon has some sort of miracle TC the IQ will suffer vs a true 400. 400mm will test the effeectiveness of the VR as well.

Given what a 400 costs vs a TC it's worth a try.
