I live and work about 15 minutes from Costa Mesa and I have not really heard of anyone wakeboarding in Newport or Balboa. There isn't really an area where water would stay calm. Most So Cal folks trailer their rigs to Elsinore, Canyon Lake, or Perris (all about an hour from Costa Mesa, with no traffic).

No riding in Newport Bay or in Balboa. Unless you go to the open ocean. In the old old days you could ski in the back bay of Newport. But that was many years ago. Now it's all 5 mph zone.
