Demented??

anyone rode the obrien demented? if so give us the scoop! thanks

I'm curious too. I've been watching the classifieds for a used one with no luck.

I rode the Demented 136 last week. Nice board seem a little to loose under my feet. I would describe it as slippery if that makes since. Pop was not bad was fairly quick but it just never felt to me like it was fully hooked up on edge. I hope that helps But hey I ride a Blindside Blade and thats just my opinion

Loose and super fast. I didn't like it too much...but then again, I rode it when I was rusty.

Super fast, a different kind of pop, and loose. I have been riding it since Darin let me ride his back in September. I am hooked. Almost everybody I put on it tells me to order them one. If you guys are in Norcal - let me know and I'll hook you a demo!

Jason, when can I stop by your place to pick one up? BTW, you busy this weekend? We have a lot of riders going up to Hogans. Arun and Callen are coming up too.

hey perfect timing, I was just going to start a new thread about it. I got my demented last week and I've only been able to ride it twice since. For the first set i was riding in 2 foot waves so I couldn't really get a feel for it. In the second set it was calm so I spent almost an hour on it. So far it is the best board I have ever ridden. It's super fast, and I sort of disagree with everyone who says it is really loose, I think it's fairly tight, altohugh you guys are right, it can be loose at times. My favorite part about it is the landings. Smooth and so easy on your knees its incredible, it also just sticks to the water when you land. I have a friend who is a decent rider. Can do hs W2W consistantly and has been having trouble toeside. Well on his first ride on the demented he learned toeside wake to wake, stuck a W2W ts 180 and to top it all off he landed a hs w2w 180. That probably doesn't mean much but I thought I'd say that so you can get a feel on how good the landings are. Anyways, I don't usually post here, and definately not that long of a post, so hopefully it makes sense.
everyone should try this board at least once.

I've ridden the dememted 131 for 6 months I love it. good pop & smooth ride.
my dad road my board this week for the first time & could finally learn tricks he ahd been working on.

Here is a review I did last fall when I had a chance to ride a preproduction Demented:


I had a chance to ride Shapiro’s new wakeboard from O’Brien, the 141 Demented and this board is killer!!!

Here is a little background of my wakeboard preferences: I have always ridden 3 stage rocker boards because I liked the pop and I didn’t feel like I could get it from a continuous rocker board. The thing I didn’t like about 3 stage boards is they seemed slow to me especially when cutting toeside, I’m sure it has a little to do with my technique, but after riding for 13 years I figured I just had to live with it!!

So I took the Demented out, which has continuous rocker with a slight kick at the tip and tail, I had never ridden a Shapiro signature board but I figured it would be fast but I wasn’t sure about the pop. The board was definitely fast, I couldn’t believe how fast it was coming in toeside. It got on edge and then it was off to the races with very little effort. Now it was time to see how it pops. BOOM!!!! This board pops as hard as any 3 stage board I have ever ridden (even the O’Brien Harris)!! I didn’t think it was possible for a continuous board to pop so well. My toeside jumps were insane, I was getting 6 feet of air easy and I felt much more comfortable coming into the wake toeside because I didn’t have to work so hard to get the speed. The landings were very soft because the bottom of the board has a……Instead of me trying to explain it to you here are the spec’s direct from Chris Johnson of O’Brien who designed the board with Shapiro:

The Demented 141 is 17" wide and has 2.45" of rocker. The underside is dual concave, kept full under the feet but flattened a bit in the center of the board to keep a good sweet spot. The edges are beveled. The deep-cut center channel and step down rail allow the tail of the board to sit-down while cutting to the wake. The fins are mounted more inwards than you usually see on a quad-fin board - this allows the board to roll on-edge smoothly and helps the board establish proper board angle on your approach. The raised deck is called the "Elevated Composite Deck". We have created this deck to give us precise control over the strength & flex of the boards. If you look at the contours, you can see they are significant in the center of the board, so the middle area (where 90% of boards break) is very strong and stiff (which contributes to the hard pop). Around the bindings the contours are reduced to allow flex under the feet on landings. The deck is finished off with 3 ribs running out the back of the board for snap off the tail of the board.

One thing Chris forgot to mention is that the tip and tail are much wider then any board Shapiro has ever ridden, I think this also adds to the incredable pop that you get from the board.

For those of you that are looking for a new board, you owe it to yourself to check out the Demented. This goes out to all you 3 stage riders also!!! I guess it’s true what they say “You will never know till you try it”

I have only had one chance to ride it again this spring but it rode just like I remembered and the best part was my toeside jumps were great even after not riding since last fall!!!

would you say its like the 03/04 DUP nelson because thats what it sounds like and the bottom and shape is very similar from the looks..

if they are different can you compare them ??

I used to ride an O’Brien Player 143. The player is a three stage with 4 molded in fins on each end. I really like the pop of it but it seemed slightly on the slow side. I tried out the Demented 141 and on first ride wasn't sold, I felt unsteady. I'm sure some of it had to do with me being rusty but as I rode I noticed I didn't have to work as hard to get it up to speed it was accelerating much faster than I was used to. As far as loose I would say its no looser than my player was without its center fins, I just think it accelerates faster. It does have good pop but I can't give you a great description of it as I am a recovering 3-stage rider so its taking some getting used to. The landings are exactly what Drew said, they are soft and stable I've ridden away on a lot of what should have been a wipe out.

J, you got a cirrus core didn't you? Have you ridden it yet?

just purchased the demented. its being shipped, i think. anyway i emailed darin and asked him to compare the lx(his old board which i currently ride) and the demented. i like an especially fast board and i was concerned the demented would be slower than the lx(which he says it is) anyway this is what he wrote:

Hi its Darin, i thought i could just drop you a quick line about the boards. the demented is different than your lx. it has quite a bit more pop and is a lot more stable. the lx is faster and carvier rail to rail but since its narrower its not as stable. my advice is, if you keep your lx youll be happy but new boards are cool and can help evolve your style. the demented is a great, great board. i bet you will love it more once you get used to it. the rocker is the same as your lx and after all.......i designed both of them. the demented is the next natural progression from the lx. youll dig it.

I just started riding the Demented 141 after riding the 2003 Hyperlite Byerly 142 DNA and the 2002 CWB Absolute for a season each.... The Demented is SUCH a better riding board. it rides so much smoother, provides a much more consistent ride and I'll put a third vote on the soft landings....
I was so sold on the 3-stage that I totally ruled out continuous rocker boards, but I can tell you this board rides WAY better than any other board I've ever riddn. I highly reccommend it!
