Just read something about it today. Has anyone done it or seen it? My teak is kind of a pain.

My concerns would be that it would burn you when out of the water, being that it's all black,

Scratching boards?

Slippery?

I did mine in Linex. Doesn't burn you. Doesn't scratch boards. Not slippery. I like it. I'd easily do it again.

The boat I am thinking about buying has a rhino lined fiberglass deck. I like it.

comes in a can at the parts store. If my platform wasn't built in, i'd be on it.

Covering that beautiful teak in rattle-can plastic should be a crime, punishable by public flogging.

You might as well do your hull in faux marble, too, while you're at it.

HATE IT!

20 yr old teak usually isn't that beautiful. would I cover a new(er) teak deck? probably not... love the look of an shiny oiled step.

My 25 year old teak was nice, the 15 year old one is nicer. If the 20 minutes speant refinishing the teak 2 times a year is that much of a hassle for you, perhaps you shouldnt own a boat

Doesn't the rhino/black colored liner get SUPER hot in the sun?
Old     (lovin_the_wake)      Join Date: Jul 2007       05-07-2008, 7:57 AM Reply
nope it's heat resistant up to a certain temp.

OUCH!!!

I wouldn't do it to a teak step. There is a reason they use teak. Even after many years of abuse you can bring it back to original shape easily.

This is mine in Linex after 4 years. It is great and mine was scratched from my lab swimming on & off it all the time. For me it was $$ well spent. Matches the theme on mine prefectly and this was the only peice of teak on the whole boat. No it does not get hot, scratch boards or tear your feet up like you would think it might. Great stuff.

Sorry Rick H I'm not buying it. I've got a couple sub boxes line-x'd in the boat and they will scratch the $#it out of you.

I think it depends on the grit you go with. there are lots of different options.

Mine looks just like his platform. Maybe so though I just could't imagine climbing all over anything line-x'd.

it really isn't as bad as you think it would be

I hear where you are coming from. I have enough stuff to do and babying teak once a month is too much. Here is a compromise that is supposed to keep the oiled wood look with just one application / yr. I'm trying it this year so can't say if the product lives up to it's claim.

I may be incorrect, but the one shown in Montgomery's post is an old picture of my swim platform off of my 81 SN. I had it covered by Linex after a few years of attempting to make the teak look good though PO let it wear out really bad. The Linex does not get hot, slippery, or scratch the boards. I don't know if I would do it to a new platform as I love the look of well kept teak, but I definitely don't regret doing it on my boat.

Why not use your braces and bolt them on to a nice rhino lined plywood deck. Then you can sell your teak, or keep it, and you have whatever size and shape deck you want?

Why don't you just buy a fiberglass swimplatform from Sanger that fits your boat? How much can they be? LineX or Rhino Liner is a cost, how much more is a fiberglass platform. The new fiberglass platforms are bigger too.

Sorry Rob I ment to say Malibu, I saw the Sanger pictures and wrote Sanger. Malibu fiberglass platform.

I had both for a while on my old boat. A teak step and a lined one. I ended up using marine grade carpet and applied that over the lined step and just stored the teak one. The carpeted swim step was by far the most comfortable one for general use.

So what kind of prep work would there be. I'm still not convinced on it, and I'd have to check the cost. I know you can get a 3m product from Autozone for $10...... But I'm not sure if that would really screw it up.

The top of my teak needs a little sanding but the bottom really looks bad, all white and dead. I know I can restore it, but I don't have a belt sander to speed up the process, and only have hand held electric sander. The black might look nice though, anyone got any more pics?

Here's a pic, I'm really wondering if there might be a compromise, what if I masked off the top and did the bottom and sides? My teak just isn't that pretty so I wouldn't feel that bad about it. They guy I bought the boat from actually replaced the original one with this one he made himself. He may have used a lower grade of wood.....or it just really need a lot of attention and a lot more sanding and oil.

Ok, I'm dumb, just did a search, I'm on here all the time, I have no idea how I missed all the other posts about this subject. I did find one pic that I thought looked sick. Might look good on mine.

Yep. That's mine. Thanks. It was done with Linex. As I already stated, I like it and would do it again.

Hey Sean,
I saw Lawrence's swimstep when he carpeted it. And it looked great. Like it was somehow molded around the corners. Is it just stapled in place underneath? Or glued down?
Any pics of yours?

yo Bill!

LC's old swim step looked like the da poop compared to mine
I've not seen the new boat in action, so maybe that one was a better a job.

When I did mine, I did like you'd carpet a speaker box. Cut refliefs out on the corners and pulled them tight! I used stainless screws with large collapsing washers on the underside and a bunch of adhiesive on the top and sides. After several seasons, mine still looked brand new. Plus, carpet is so nice to slide a Skyski off of!

I'll have to find our old harddrive to see if I have any pics on there.
