It seems like a lot of people on the site have or are currently taking delivery of their 2005 boats. Could everyone post their pics of their new boats so that they are all on one thread? I'm still riding behind a 10 year old Malibu so I don't have any pictures to post of new boats but would like to see yours.

Very nicely equipped, around $50k with trailer. A little more if maxed out, less if stripped.

Another great looking boat. Are you using this boat now or are you still using your 24SSV? I like the tower speakers on top of the tower for increased head room and room for the bimini top.

Three observations:

1) MC wins the tower wars.
2) BU has a schizophrenic tower image.
3) CC has the ugliest least progressive towers.

yep. true. three opinions.

I dig what MC is doing with towers -- spinning and clamping racks -- great bimini.

I don't dig the BU tower at all -- bad to fold - tiny bimini - limited options.

And, the CC towers are pathetic -- new and ugly or old and awkward.

My opinions on the towers are exaactly the opposite, but for different reasons.

BU & CC - very strong, little or no flex (FCT & Illusion X).

MC - moderate amount of flex.
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       06-07-2005, 9:06 PM Reply
PCI, you could be right about that. I actually have no idea about their flex, but that easy enough for someone to test.

I also have no negative opinion of sanger or supra tower options -- I don't expect these companies to be pushing the envelope -- they both offer great boats with reasonable tower options -- better than BU/CC in tower look/function in my opinion.

But, we are all entitled our opinion.

Yeah, what works for one person, may not for the next.

The CC tower was actually a + in my book when I went for my last boat. Was a little apprehensive about the '04 FCT, but I really like it, looks grew on me. Solid tower, folds down easily to get the beast in the garage.

Do like the MC racks, though.

Hey Porkchops, how do you differentiate between the flex characteristics of the towers?? Just curious. I have ridden behind all 3 '05's, and I honestly cannot feel flex in any of them?? Now, my old Prostar with the extended pylon on it, that was some serious flex...haha
Old     (socalwakepunk)      Join Date: Dec 2002       06-07-2005, 9:49 PM Reply
I hang my 200+ lb. body from the tower and start swinging. I can feel the flex. Also, you can actually see towers loaded with boards & speakers flex. The Tuna Tower on my old Malibu was like jello when we had it loaded up.

May not affect riding much, but makes me feel better about my ride when things aren't shaking like an 8.0. Also, may wear/break parts. Went through half a dozen shoulder bolts on my old tower.

Jeff ~ I'm sure just the BU tower is more solid then the MC tower but the CC tower more solid then MC tower???

I think those MC owners need to tighten their tower bolts!LOL

My tower flexes very little and I do have NVS speakers on the tower that I'm sure don't help with the whole flexing thing but I can tell you ,It's night and day when I tighten the tower down. Also another thing is probably that the MC towers are sooo tall that it's harder to make them as solid as for instance CC towers or BU towers.

It's definetely matter of opinion when it comes to the whole boat thing,b\c if I bumped my head on my tower as much as I bumped my head on other peoples boats(towers) I swear I'd tear that efen thing out.LOL
Old     (socalwakepunk)      Join Date: Dec 2002       06-08-2005, 6:56 AM Reply
Big Ed - You would hate my tower (always bumpung my head on the dang thing). I'd be more than happy to test your tower with my incredible bulk. Just been my experiences with the towers. The MC towers didn't seem loose, just had more flex than the CC or BU towers that I had been on. Still, they are way more solid than some aftermarket towers that I have seen.

I've lived with the Malibu Illusion-X tower now for a few months, and love it. It gives great field of vision, is stiff, and the "tiny" bimini is way up out of the way, and tight as a drum.

It's definitely superior to a regular bimini. In actuallity it's about the same size as most biminis, but higher, so once the sun angles it doesn't shade as well. You can also buy an extension for the back that adds about 2-feet to it.

I love the Illusion-X after living with it a while. No way I'd want to go back to a "regular" tower now.

Porkchops have you even seen the new tower on the MC? My old zero flex was pretty bad but the new one there is NO flex what so ever.

I have to agree with Dane. BU and CC worst looking towers on the market. Except Buzz's tower, it looks pretty sweet.

I like the new Supra towers as well, although my buddy that has a new 21v says it rattles a bit. The new Tige towers look super solid as well. Sanger needs a serious update on their tower. I think Bu wins with the ugliest tower award with illusion.
Old     (ripr)      Join Date: Mar 2002       06-08-2005, 8:00 AM Reply
I'll have to say that the new tower on the Supra's is a stout tower. It doesn't shake or move at all. The only nois on the tower is the Roswell swing in board racks.
Old    zboomer            06-08-2005, 8:02 AM Reply
"I think Bu wins with the ugliest tower award with illusion."

Your personal award maybe, but Malibu is the #1 inboard boat seller, and most customers want the Illusion, so obviously some beg to differ. :-)

My local dealer probably sells the Illusion-X 10:1 at least over other towers available.

I personally find some other towers horribly ugly, but hey, if you can't say something nice, I just won't say it...

I agree with NAW, my tower doesn't make a sound or move an inch, even when towing it on the freeway. Most solid tower that I have ever seen, plus it looks great. Too bad I can't say that for the Tige's or the Illusion.
Old     (big_ed_x2)      Join Date: Jul 2004       06-08-2005, 9:02 AM Reply
I like the illusions look,I just don't think it's very practical or tall enough for that matter.

Jeff your incredible bulk will buckle down my tower.LOLI noticed a big different with the NVS up there them when I had the Clarions. But between the sound and the tallness and the coolness of my tower....I'll take a little flex.
Old    bambamski            06-08-2005, 9:04 AM Reply
When I checked out those Roswell racks I thought they might rattle a bit NAW. Is there no way to tighten them up? On the MC ones there's a knob that screws in so the racks don't move.

When I said the 21v tower rattled a bit I was just going by what my buddy said that just bought one. I haven't gotten a chance to ride in it because it's been raining for a solid week here. I can hardly wait to try out the 21v wake, although he's still debating whether or not to get the gravity sack for the bow.

Boomer, I think either you like it or hate it, there really doesn't seem to be any middle ground of opinions on the illusion. My buddy that bought a boat this year wouldn't even look at the Bu because of the towers. So if you look at it that way, 80-90% of potential inboard buyers are buying a boat that doesn't have a tower that looks like the illusion.
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       06-08-2005, 10:13 AM Reply
Tell me this about the illusion tower...

1) How does it fold down?
2) How do you add more racks?
3) How come the bimini is so small (WE like the shade when we are out on the delta for 8 hrs).
4) Does the rope still get caught on the racks?
5) Isn't the tower lower than other towers?

BTW, I just saw the MC 2005 tower yesterday in person and I got to say it is a work of art. This from a BU owner.

Tower folds forward by removing two allen bolts on the tower. It does take two people and about a minute which is one of the down sides.

Racks: There are two mounting locations on each side of the tower allowing for 4 boardracks. See picture for rough estimate of where they are.

The bimini is 5ft from front to back and there is a 30in extension available. The bimini is one of the most sturdy in the industry but has its downside of being so high up there that it really works best with the sun directly above you.

The rope does still get caught on the board racks which is also a downside to the tower. But to counter that I have been in other boats from virtually every other manufacture and many of them had the rope get caught on a rack as well

Yes the tower is a little lower than others. It is about 4-6in. lower than the Titan series three.

After having a boat with the Illusion X and one with the TIII I cannot complain about either one when it comes to a function stand point. I personally like the looks of the Titan better but both towers have their good features and bad features.

I just bought an X2 and I have to say I'm not a fan of the new towers either. I'm a big Titan fan. Titan towers are a lot more solid. Steel to Alunimum is no comparison.
Old     (socalwakepunk)      Join Date: Dec 2002       06-08-2005, 9:10 PM Reply
I wouldn't worry, J-Rod. The tower looks good, and the board racks work well. You should be able to forgive a little flex and really appreciate the whole pkg. as a new owner.
Old     (monstertower)      Join Date: Mar 2003       06-08-2005, 9:23 PM Reply
"Steel to Alunimum is no comparison" I personally believe this is a misconception by all but Materials Engineers, and if one is out there please chime in.

Pound for Pound aluminum is a better material for towers, which is why all the huge tuna towers going 30+ feet above sport fishing boats are aluminum. As well as most wakeboard towers. You get strength some from wall thickness, but much more from larger diameter tubing and tower design. Titan using 2-1/4" diameter tubing and having the Wishbone design (Titan I and II) is what makes them solid. They probably use about a .050" wall stainless. If they used a .15" wall aluminum the tower would be lighter and just as strong.

My $0.02 is from a pure engineering standpoint, MC and BU are the ones I'm really impressed with on what they are doing with their factory towers.
Old     (socalwakepunk)      Join Date: Dec 2002       06-08-2005, 9:35 PM Reply
Agree with you Bill. Especially on tower design. When I used to work in the off road racing/fabrication industry, the key word when building a chassis/cage was TRIANGULATION.
Old     (jarrod)      Join Date: May 2003       06-09-2005, 7:27 AM Reply
True but aluminum still moves more, flexs more, and cracks at the welds. This is why you have seen so many cracked aluminum towers. I'm no engineer, but in the end, steel is still stronger if you're comparing similar structures I would think.

"which is why all the huge tuna towers going 30+ feet above sport fishing boats are aluminum."

Are you certain that is the reason? Or is it because a steel structure that large is too heavy? Wakeboarders don't care about the weight. Maybe fishing boats do.
