Long story short....my new 05' X2 with less than 30 hours, 2002 SANTE, two 42' Fountains and a few other boats along with things like 2003 Expeditions, GMC Duelly's, and others gone.

Bad start to the new year. Check out the pics at http://www.tamarackshack.com/fire/index.html

Was this a storage facility? If so, does their ins. cover the fire.
Needless to say, really sorry to hear about your
loss.

Today is Ken and Heidi's wedding reception so we'll throw down a few toasts to Ken's old boat. We do have the Chicago boat show next week.

They have no idea how the fire started but we have ideas. There's a heater directly above Ken's boat so something must have happed and dropped down on his boats. They were all winterized, batteries disco'd, etc. so there shouldn't have been any way for the boat to self combust.

My boat will need a new tower, speakers, lights, wiring, and some gelcoat work. I really want to get the soot off the boat so I can see the real damage. I am worried about the interior. I am certain they can get it clean but the smell is pretty bad so I hope they can either replace it or make certain that in 6 months when someone takes a seat they don't get a woof of soot and fire.

Man, that's one of the worst things I have seen in a long time. Best of luck to you. Hang in there!

That is awful. When and where was the fire? I had not heard about it on the news.

It was in a series of Aluminum buildings in Spring Grove right across the street from Tommy's Bar. It was discovered when a group of guys that work out of the building. If it had been a Saturday or Sunday who knows how bad it would have been...probably would have been better for those of us who now have to deal with arguing over what's lost.

Gosh! All of my high school kids were talking about it at school yesterday. Had I known your boat was in there I would have paid more attention to their stories. Earlier this year in Spring Grove a mom and three kids perished in a house fire so now the whole community gets concerned when they hear about a fire. Thankfully no people were hurt but that X-2 was/is so sweet! I would have gladly offered my '98 moomba to take its place in the fire . Hopefully insurance won't be jerks about this - like Army Dad suggested on the other thread - it would be worth it to pay for a Mastercraft specialist to come and take a look at it.

Keep us posted on the boat's status and what insurance has to say. Hang in there!

Today the boat is going to be finally taken out of the building the fire was in and dropped off at a place that will do a basic cleaning. The two 42' Sonics surveyor told the owners yesterday that he was forwarding a recommendation of total. There were no blistering on thier hull. I am trying to find out more info. One of the boat owners is an engineer and was able to do a lot of research on the temperatures like when will gelcoat get hot enough to become brittle, how hot does fiberglass need to be etc...

My boat was closer to the boat that caught fire but my surveyor is an idiot. I have a phone call into SkiSafe to find out if the info gathered from the other surveyor on the other boats would help me at all.

Will Forgie, the mech at my local dealer, has been in contact with MC engineering to find out what they might be able to do/say. One thing he aslo pointed out and is waiting for a firm answer on is warrantee on a boat that was in a fire. The saga continues.

John,

It sucks that your misery is compunded by an incompetent surveyor.
I think you are proceeding wisely. If this guys work up is that far out of line with what the other pros are saying, I would seek a second, independent survey.

John Jared, good luck to you. I will tell you this though. From my 21 years experience as a professional firefighter, you will never get it fully clean, you will never get the smell all the way out and it will never be 100% again. I don't want to sound like a downer, but this is very realistic. As terrible as it sounds, you may be a lot better off if the surveyor and insurance can total it. I wish you even more luck since you say your surveyor is an idiot.

My boat was damaged by the company towing it to get cleaned. I can't believe all this BS.

The people loading it should have known it would be damaged by the way they loaded it. They should have used the chains that are on the tounge to hold it down and not scratch the trailer, and they should have had it away from the hoop or removed the swim platform.

Prior to seeing the towing damage photos, I was thinking how it would probably be damaged. Your photos alone will show that it was improperly loaded, but they might say that you should have know because you took "perfect" photos showing where the damage will happen.

Either way, hopefully it will be totaled.

I actually said stuff to the driver and he replied they had to load it that way and chain it down etc. or they'd get a ticket. I didn't see him do everything and after his response I took a bunch of pics.

What did your insurance company say? Did you push for a new boat? If there is gel coat damage, tower needs to be replaced, speakers and having to redo the interior at some point it may be cheaper to get you a new boat and sell that one off. Then to top if off the cleaning company damages the boat? Don't buy a lotto ticket.

The swim platform ding is the main reason I went with Teak. A little sand paper and she'd be as good as new...

John ~ I don't know what to say, but I am sorry. Very painfully to just look at the pics. I can't even imagine what you are feeling.

You may be able to get her clean. It'll be a chore, but don't give up faith that it could be restored to it's original condition. If it can't be restored back to showroom condition then they damn well better total it.

At least it's winter right now. Let us know who's insuring it and how it works out.

John I'll be sure to keep you in my prayers. Man this sucks. I hope everything works out for the best. I have been thinking about changing my insurance to Skisafe. How have they been to deal with on your claim?
Old     (wakeguru)      Join Date: Feb 2003       02-01-2005, 11:29 AM Reply
I see now where John said he was insuring it through SkiSafe...I'm not sold on their product/service based on what I've heard and I'm curious to know how they deal with you on this one.

I use Allstate, but I have been fortunate to never have a claim - especially after three hurricanes last summer.

Damn fella, I remember how stoked you were on your new boat just a few short months ago. I certainly hope that everything works out for you. Keep your chin up!!!

John sorry to see that happen to the X-2. That is unbelievable!!! I have SKiSafe and have made two claims for my Wing dam accident on the river from that Fall Fallout last year. SKISAFE stood behind the work and have covered all damages totaling 3,500 dollars minus my 500 hundred dollar deduct
