Malibu VTX wake ????

How does the VTX wake compare to the VLX is shape and size? I have a 2005 VLX and am considering going to a 2008 VTX with the power wedge--any opinions or comments would be appreciated! Thanks

All I've heard is that the VLX wake is far better. I really have no other input. I'd like to try it out for myself. As far as I know it's a shortened VLX.

Nice boat, but it sure would suck to be disappointed by the wake. I rarely believe what people have to say about a wake though. I think you've gotta find someone with a dialed boat and make a decision for yourself.

I heard the wake is flat, but like Evan. I have not seen this for myself. I absolutely love the VLX wake though.

i've ridden both wakes and i really like the crispness of the VTX wake i rode behind but we had that thing SLAMMED...the vlx wake is mackin too...right outta the box

I always give props to Malibu boats. Just sharing what I heard, and I was honest about never riding one.

BTW..I heard the above from an employee of a Malibu dealer.

If you only heard something but haven't experienced it for yourself, then why even talk? There are enough educated people on this website that can correctly answer the question.

I love my VLX, but it is black and white and I'm looking to get an all white boat due to the water conditions on our lake---the black is hard to take care of and I'm super anal about my stuff. So in looking for a new boat I thought the smaller boat might handle better around the islands. Also, its mostly myself and Poser riding, sometimes a 3rd. So I don't really need a big boat anymore. We dockstart and when not riding, hang out around the dock/beach, play with the dogs, etc.

I was looking at a VLX and VTX. My salesguy, whom I actuall trust, said the VTX is a smaller version of the VLX and can get a nice size wake. However add some weight to the VLX and there is no comparison. He said the VLX is just bigger and will displace more water.

Steve...J-rod's post contributed nothing. Scott's point is why post about something you have heard? Post what you have experienced. Even if Scott is a Malibu dealer, who the #$%* cares? He didn't use this as an opportunity to promote himself or his dealership.

Oh, and quick reminder-

You can get the VTX in a wake hull or ski hull. I'm sure the majority of VTX's out there are on a wake hull, but I'd double check when you're at the dealer just in case.

If you're serious about wakeboarding go with the VLX! The wake on the VTX is not bad but IMO it's nothing like the VLX. It's not as big and a lot mellower. I have ridden behind both!

Chuck, let your dealer know that you're thinking about both models and they should bring you out in both of them so you can compare and make your decision.

I have a question that might be pertinent to this discussion... Is a smaller boat's wake adversely affected by a shallow lake as much as a larger boat? Is there any sort of correlation in regards to boat size?

Having been behind Chuck's VLX in both shallow & deep water, I will say it throws a huge wake. But definitely bigger in deep water.

from a vlx owner standpoint. full ballest including bow and power wedge at only 400# and olny two in the boat, the wake will break your knees, imo. my boy has a vtx no bow ballest with floating wedge. wake is very similar but needs weight up front too get that steepness mine has. but the lip and firmness is there. the wedge makes it thick on both boats. with my experience buy a vlx dont lose the extra 2 seats you will need them when you add weight. and you lose 2 more in the vtx right away. vlx = flagship, enough said. whats a few more grand for the bigger, better wake, imo. the vtx is a great boat if you have a restriction on length at your lake. otherwise, why?

Chuck doesn't have restrictions. He just has to get around the islands of a private lake, with a loaded down VLX it can become a little hairy. If a smaller boat can manuever a little better it might be worth it.

Chuck - Talk to Pat, he can probably set you up to test a VTX. If so, let me know, I will join you.

Like Jarrod.... I have apparently added nothing, but when I make comments they come from good sources. Not just some sucker that calls himself a wakeboarder. My source was the same dealer that Jarrod was talking about.

Keep in mind that when we talk wakes we're serious. We don't consider things like "stock ballast". We're looking for absolute max wake making ability. Pretty sure Chuck is the same way. Everyone I talked to said the VLX is where it's at.

BTW, I dig Malibu's also. I loved riding behing Jarrods LSV. I inquired about the VTX because we though it would make a perfect replacement for my X2.

I've ridden behind a VTX with stock ballast & power wedge. I was not impressed at all, neither were the other two riders who rode it. I was actually very surprised at how bad the wake was I figured it would be decent. Maybe it would be better with more set-up time. Very nice boat, otherwise. For reference I have an older VLX.......

I own a Supra, so I have no bias towards Malibu. However, I have ridden the VTX wake and I thought it was awesome. I spent a weekend on the lake in a VTX last summer. With 4 passengers in the boat and me riding behind it, I was very impressed with the size and shape of the wake. This particular VTX had the power wedge and I thought that made all the difference.

Granted, I have not been in the newer VLX's, only the old VLX hull (now V-ride), so I really can't give you a comparison between the two boats you're looking at. I can tell you what I liked about the VTX though. Inside I thought it was very spacious considering we had 5 guys and two full size coolers in the boat. I couldn't believe we were in a 20ft boat.

With stock ballast, 4 guys in the boat, 2 coolers stocked full of beer, and the power wedge deployed, I thought the wake was very similar to a SAN 210. It was steep and surprisingly firm. A firm SAN like wake was not something I was used to from riding behind the old VLX hull. In fact, the wake was a little more than I was ready for that day (I was dealing with a bad hangover). However, with the power wedge the driver was able to adjust the wedge on the fly and get the wake to a more manageable shape for my wussy ass. Basically, the power wedge was like my Supra's wakeplate on steroids.

The surf wake behind this boat was one of the best surf wakes I have surfed. In addition to the stock ballast we added another 1000 lbs and 3-4 guys to the side we were surfing. The wave was clean with no wash and huge!

I still love my Supra 22SSV, but if I were in the market for a new boat I would certainly give the VTX a look.

J-Rod...nope, actually own a VLX. I just don't understand why people post with "I have heard" comments. My intent with my post was to encourage people to post with what they have experienced. Really has nothing to do with what I own...I own what I own because it is the right thing for me.

Chuck, I think just keep your boat you have that thing is so dialed in and who knows you might venture from that little piece of paradise to a big lake once in awhile.
