After going through my 3rd Kenwood 10" I installed a Type R 12". I used the factory box, cut the diameter out to fit the 12", added a dedicated 750w mono amp to power it. It sounds great, is out of the way / protected from water (and other possible damage) and is loud. Here is a pic.

I tried running the Type R through the existing amps at first but it didn't have the power. I went with a Kicker mono 750w amp for the sub alone (I also added additional an additional fuse, 0 gauge wires for power and 4g wires to the sub). One Kenwood amp runs the interior speakers and the other runs the tower speakers. It's working great. For my money and sound pleasure I added a third amp. I did look at some of the Alpine, Kenwood, Polk, JL, Boston A., and Sony mono amps, went with the kicker for strong output. Good Luck.
